A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: On this date, we recall the martyrdom of John the Baptist by Herod Antipas (Mark 6:14-29). John spoke the truth to authority. He pointed to the One who is the Truth, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:19-34). May we speak the Truth to authority whenever we have opportunity by the power of Christ's Spirit.

Authentic Relationships vs. Relationships on Our Own Terms

:Today, August 15, we join Christians throughout the world in remembering Mary, the mother of our Lord. We hear of her about a dozen times in Scripture, always as a model of faith and faithfulness to God's promises of salvation through her Son, Jesus, the Christ. May we exhibit such faith and faithfulness throughout our lives.

A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: The Bible reminds us to teach our children (Deuteronomy 6:7; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4; Luke 18:16). A new resource for families is "Journey through Church History" by Christa Petzold by Concordia Publishing House. I highly recommend it as a way to help the next generation of believers to become aware of their "family of faith."
