Welcome! This Sunday we wrap up our 40 sermon series by jumping into the Gospels. We'll join Jesus for 40 days in the wilderness, right before he begins his ministry. It is the pattern for the season of Lent, which kicks off next Wednesday - and we will uncover together what more we can explore as we focus on 40.

Jonah 3:1-4:1
This weekend's message looks at Jonah, one of the quirkiest books in the Bible! We'll hear about a disgruntled prophet, a city with forty days to repent, and just how big God's grace truly is. Buried in this comical story is a lesson for us - who sometimes run in the wrong direction, and often need the experience of turning the other way.

Numbers 13:1-3, 17-20, 25-33
This weekend we continue our series looking at the number forty in the Bible - as we continue through this, the 40th anniversary year of St. Paul's. We'll read another story involving Moses - but focus on the opportunities and problems that emerge from forty days of exploration. We'll be challenged to consider our own agency as we move into the future. And we'll be invited to reconsider challenges that feel insurmountable.

There are some numbers that seem particularly significant in our lives. Birthdays like 16, 21, and 50. We like to buy things by the dozen, and a child will tell you that 100 of anything is a lot! It's true in the Bible, too, that some numbers seem particularly significant. Stories often come in threes; seven indicates completion; and the number forty just keeps showing up. 40 days here, 40 cubits of that, 40 years out there. 
Well, it turns out 40 is significant in our lives too - like St. Paul's celebrating our 40th anniversary this year! So this Sunday, we're going to kick off a four part series looking at some of the places we encounter that number in the scriptures. The series is called 40 (creative, right?). And it turns out these scriptures might just have something to say to us in the midst of our big celebration. We'll kick it off with Moses, whose whole life is segmented into forties. Join us for the journey! 

This Sunday we're focusing on Baptism, as we read about Jesus and John at the Jordan River. The beginning of the new year will be the perfect time for us to celebrate Jesus' baptism, remember ours, and remember the calls to community and justice that we say 'yes' to each time we celebrate a baptism.

Matthew 2:1-7
This Sunday we celebrate Epiphany, which means appearance or manifestation. We often talk about epiphanies as "a-ha" moments - where clarity comes abruptly. It is the feast that concludes the Twelve Days of Christmas, and the time that we celebrate the Magi who follow a star to their own "a-ha" moment. In this familiar story, there is wisdom and invitation for us today.
