We begin our look at the New Testament with the gospels.

In this sermon, we look at the Apocrypha, specifically the story of the Maccabean revolt. The Apocrypha is a collection of writings between the Old and New Testaments that give us great history and context for the New Testament. Scriptures include 1 Maccabees 1:1-10, 20, 41-50, 54-64; 2:19-22, 29-41.

We finish our look at the Old Testament with the prophets. Prophets were unpopular due to their insistence on caring for the poor and calling out the hypocrisy of those in power.

In this sermon, we pause the story of the Israelites to look at some of their writings, including Ruth, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes,, and Song of Songs.

The Israelites are able to return from the exile to rebuild. How is God present with us in the midst of tragedy and rebuilidng a new normal? Ezra 1:1-4 and Nehemiah 2:1-6.

This sermon covers 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, and 2 Kings., which describe the period of the kings.

In this sermon, we look at the book of Judges. Far from being a book of heroes that set an example for us, these stories show us the complicated nature of humanity. Scriptures include Judges 2:1-23 and 21:25.

In this sermon, we tackle the most disturbingly violent passages of scripture. Did God really command the Hebrews to kill every man, woman, and child in Canaan so they could take their land? How you answer this question can reveal a lot about who you believe God is and what kinds of behavior are permissable for individuals and nations. Scriptures include Deuteronomy 20:16-18; Joshua 6:15-21; 13:1; 16:10; and 17:12.

In this sermon, we look at the law in Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy and come to discover that the law is not something we should use today to convict someone of sin or to win a culture war.

In this sermon, we go through the book of Exodus. As we do, we take time to wrestle with the ethical problem of God killing children to get his way, and we find comfort knowing that God remenbers us in our own time of exile.
