Luke 1:1-4
The first in our series looking at Jesus through the Gospel of Luke.
Our hope is that as we spend our Sunday mornings this year delving into this amazing account of Jesus' life we might come to see Jesus more clearly, love Him more dearly and walk with Him more nearly.
A few helpful facts about the Gospel of Luke...
It's one of four accounts of Jesus' life.
It's written by Luke, who was a physician, artist and a companion of Paul.
Luke is the only author in the Bible who is not of Jewish heritage.
The Gospel of Luke is the first of his two books in the Bible and there are many strong links with his second book, Acts.
Luke's Gospel was written 20-35 years after Jesus' death to a 'patron' Theophilus and it's implied that it is also to Gentile Christians.
Common themes in Luke's Gospel include...
God's Messiah has come to His people
That Jesus is the Saviour, including to the marginalised and the Gentiles
Forgiveness of sins is through the death and resurrection of Jesus
Jesus' ministry is in the power of the Holy Spirit
Some of the account of Jesus' life is unique to the book of Luke, i.e the Samaritan and Prodigal stories.
