  • Stuck in a cycle of breakups and makeups? Here’s why…
We've all been in a relationship that just can't seem to make up its mind.

One day you're together, the next day you're broken up, and a week later you're back on again.

While this cycle of breakups and makeups can be exhausting, it's actually more common than you might think.

According to research published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, a whopping 37% of cohabiting couples and 23% of married couples have experienced a breakup and then gotten back together with their current partner. That's a lot of people stuck in a cycle of uncertainty!

So why does this happen and what are the consequences of being in an on-again, off-again relationship?

The same research suggests that couples who experience breakups and makeup during the dating phase are more likely to continue this pattern into cohabitation and even marriage.

It’s not just a matter of "oh, we're just figuring things out". The reality is that on-again, off-again relationships are often marked by lower quality and more uncertainty.

In fact, couples who have experienced breakups and makeup report being less satisfied in their relationships and having more uncertainty about their future together.

What can you do if you're stuck in an on-again, off-again relationship?

According to Psychology Today, you can start by taking a step back and evaluating your relationship. Are you truly happy, or are you just holding on because it's comfortable or familiar?

Next, consider seeking support from a therapist or counsellor who can help you and your partner work through your issues and develop healthier communication patterns.

Finally, remember that it's okay to walk away if the relationship is no longer serving you.

It's better to be single and happy than stuck in a cycle of breakups and makeups.

  • Iain Buchan conquers Antarctica's Ice Marathon at 75
At the age of 75, Iain Buchan has proven that age is just a number by completing the gruelling Ice Marathon in Antarctica.

This incredible feat was not just a personal challenge, but also a testament to Buchan's dedication to promoting early childhood development through the Unlimited Child initiative.

The Ice Marathon, held in Antarctica, is considered one of the toughest marathons in the world.

Runners face extreme temperatures, ranging from -10 to -12 degrees Celsius, and a challenging terrain that's similar to running in soft sand.

The course consists of four loops on a 10.5km track, with aid stations providing essential rest points for runners to refuel and hydrate.

Buchan's daughter, Wallis Watt, who also ran the marathon, described the conditions as "very energy-sapping due to the give in the snow".

Despite these harsh conditions, the family demonstrated remarkable resilience, completing the marathon alongside 62 runners from around the world.

The marathon was not just a physical challenge, but also a mental one. Watt recalled that the runners found motivation in the natural beauty surrounding them.

"There was so little to distract us, so we focused on small things like the glittering snow and the million shades of blue in the sky."

Buchan's finish was particularly memorable, as he coincidentally completed his final lap with his family. "My dad was finishing his third lap at the same time that Ken [Watt] and I came through the finish," Watt explained. "Ken grabbed the South African flag, and we ran through the finish together."

This extraordinary achievement follows the family's history of taking on extreme challenges, from conquering mountains to trekking across the South Pole, all in support of the Unlimited Child's mission.

To date, this non-profit organisation has already impacted more than 2 million children across Southern Africa and Yemen, training more than 12,000 practitioners and empowering nearly 6,000 Early Childhood Development centres.

  • Songwriting in the park: Nandipha's visionary brainchild
In a city buzzing with talent, one innovative initiative is bringing singer-songwriters together to create, inspire, and thrive. Welcome to Songwriting in the Park, the brainchild of Nandipha, a passionate singer-songwriter who's breaking down barriers and fostering a community of creatives.
Stacey and J Sbu caught up with Nandipha to learn more about this exciting project. "I started Songwriting in the Park because I felt that in Durban, there weren't enough events for songwriters, and especially not enough free events for the youth," she explains. "I wanted to create a space where we could get together, be creative, and write songs without feeling like it's a secret."
That's exactly what's happening. Songwriting in the Park is a regular gathering where singer-songwriters come together to share their talents, collaborate on new material, and draw inspiration from one another. It's a space where creativity knows no bounds, and where the next big hit might just be born.
So, how can you be a part of this exciting movement? The next Songwriting in the Park event is scheduled for March, and Nandipha invites anyone interested to join in. "You can follow our Instagram account, @creativesinthepark, and join our WhatsApp group chat to stay updated on upcoming events," she says.
As Stacey, one of the interviewers, notes, "This is something that's so interesting because creative individuals, especially singer-songwriter people, often don't have many events to showcase their talents. To create that space is incredible."
With Songwriting in the Park, Nandipha is not only providing a platform for creatives to shine but also inspiring a sense of community and collaboration. As J Sbu, the other interviewer, puts it, "This is pretty cool what you're doing here. Very cool."
If you're a singer-songwriter looking for a creative outlet, or simply someone who appreciates great music, be sure to follow Songwriting in the Park on social media and join the movement. Who knows? You might just discover the next big thing in music.
