  • Creation Corner: The People of the Language

Special: Thane and Rhett continue their discussion about the Witani language project Thane's been working on. A language thrives when people speak it, so this week we talk about the Witani, the imaginary warriors who live freely in vast, open spaces and tend to their herds of hardy horses.

In this episode we mention a couple things you may want to turn to for inspiration:

    • Skyrim has an atmospheric, adventurous soundtrack. You've likely heard it before, but man--it's worth another listen, especially as you build your next adventure! Thane particularly mentions the thematic music around the city of Whiterun.
  • We're both fans of the style and look of the Rohirrim from the Lord of the Rings. The movies do a great job of bringing this people based on the Anglo-Saxons to life. For some inspiration, check out the look of their armor and the artistic styling of their buildings.
  • Thane's work has led to a couple fun episodes that have really stretched our understanding of language and has led our thoughts in new directions. Thank you!

  • Creation Corner: Languages

Special: Thane and Rhett talk about a project Thane's been working on. Languages are given lip service in D&D, but what happens if you want to showcase this aspect of your game? Listen in for some pointers on how to start to include a language of your own creation at your table. We hope you enjoy this little episode, and we're starting to gear up for the beginning of our next season!

In this episode we mention two free online services that can help you start to build your own language:

    • Etymonline is an etymological dictionary that focuses on where words come from. Great for satisfying your own curiosity, but also helpful in figuring out how to create word histories in your own devised language!
  • Thane introduces Awkword, an automated tool that generates words based on letters you provide.
  • Conlangery, a current podcast dedicated to discussing the mechanics of creating your own language. At well over 100 episodes, there's plenty to keep your brain going!
  • Do you want to make your own language? Give it a shot, and let us know how it's going!

  • Special: The DM's Well of Inspiration, Part II

It's almost inevitable--one day, the DM's well of inspiration will run dry. Or perhaps you're a new DM, and feel daunted by the task that lies ahead? Either way, in this special episode we offer some places from which you can draw inspiration in coming up with ideas.

In this episode, we share our memories of our recent family trip to Germany. We got to see some magnificent, inspirational places that are simply fuel for fantasy role-playing games! Throughout the week, check out our Twitter and Instagram pages for pictures and videos we'll share.

    In particular, we'll talk about:

    • The lovely university town of Heidelberg, and its gorgeous old town main street
  • Neuschwanstein, the lovely and graceful castle built through a mad king's fancy
  • Rothenburg, a fantastic walled medieval city, perhaps the best-preserved in the world
  • Heidelberg Castle, which still keeps a watchful eye over the town below
  • Neuleiningen, the castle and village that captured Rhett's young imagination and was a completely serendipitous find
  • Schwetzingen Gardens, the impressive formal display complete with fanciful buildings tucked away in each corner
  • There was lots for us to see and do, but we couldn't do it complete justice in this brief episode. If you have questions about a place, please send them our way!

And if you like what you hear, please take a moment to leave us a five star rating on iTunes--it will help connect us with other gamers.
