December 29, 2024Phantom Thread (with Jake Green, podcaster)Greetings! In this episode we're tackling Paul Thomas Anderson's absolutely brilliant romantic tale PHANTOM THREAD (2017).If you haven't seen it (which I suspect for some of you, you haven't), here's a brief, yet excellent, synopsis I found on IMDB: In glamorous 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes, and dames in the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a strong-willed young woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.Joining us for the discussion is podcaster, filmmaker, and all-around awesome dude, Jake Green! September 13, 2024Friday the 13th (1980)Greetings! In this episode I nerd out for about 30ish minutes on the 1980 Sean S. Cunningham classic FRIDAY THE 13th. That's right. The OG Friday. The one without the hockey mask-wearing, machete-wielding lake demon, known as Jason Voorhees.Disclaimer: Jason was NOT the original killer in Friday the 13th... something that anyone who has ever seen SCREAM (1996) is more than aware of. Why you should listen: I discuss a little bit of the origins to Friday the 13th as a folklore. I breakdown the film a little bit. I offer a little personal perspective. And, yes, I share the scathing Gene Siskel review of this film. This is a fun(ish) one. August 05, 2024Raiders of the Lost Ark (with filmmaker/novelist Neil Laird)Greetings! Time to bust out your whips and Fedoras, cause we're going on an Indiana Jones adventure - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. A movie so iconic it requires no introduction. But because some of us have been living under a giant boulder for the past 40+ years (not unlike the giant boulder in this movie) I included an intro anyway...Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 American action-adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Set in 1936, the film stars Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, a globetrotting archaeologist vying with Nazi German forces to recover the long-lost Ark of the Covenant which is said to make an army invincible. Teaming up with his tough former romantic interest Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), Jones races to stop rival archaeologist René Belloq (Paul Freeman) from guiding the Nazis to the Ark and its power. And Joining us to help break down this all-time great adventure is filmmaker/novelist/ancient history guru NEIL LAIRD. Neil is an absolute legend! But don't take my word for it. Here's his bio on IMDB...'Neil is an LGBTQIA+, multiple Emmy-nominated Executive Producer who has worked extensively on both the network and production side of non-fiction TV since 1997. He's developed, overseen, and produced over 1,000 hours of non-fiction programs and specials in nearly every genre, with a particular passion, expertise, and contacts in history, archaeology, and international exploration.Laird has also written two novels, 'Prime Time Travelers' and 'Prime Time Pompeii', both comedic, fantastical takes on his experiences as a TV producer shooting in ancient lands.'
