As pastors and church leaders seek to be in obedience to God as it relates to worship and the jurisdictional authority of the Church, Civil Authority and the Constitution, how should a person choose the path to go clearly recognizing such a difference of applications of executive orders and mandates that we are seeing from state to state during this COVID-19 plague?
In America's history and in PA, William Penn made the statement; “If we’ll not be governed by God, we’ll be ruled by tyrants.” William Penn here connected the biblical concept of God as ultimate authority and freedom and a rejection of God by the citizens and rulers as tyranny and bondage. How can these be tied together with God and His Word as our highest law and then our Declaration and Constitution as our highest Civil Authority?
In the Old Testament God established that rebellion to authority is to be severely punished. In the New Testament there is the principle of submitting to authority and to civil authority since this is a creation of God for our protection and order in society. How is this principle of submission balanced with the context of the Apostle Peter’s reply in Act 5:29 that a Christian’s duty is to obey God rather than man?
There is a fundamental principle in the Bible found in I Sam 15:23 where it says, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. How does God define rebellion? Why must we ensure that any actions today by pastors, employers or individual citizens never be viewed by God as rebellion?
