Matt Foley is a poet rockstar, surfer, Buddhist, yoga teacher, and amazing guy. He is the author of two books of poetry, We Could Be Oceans and The Typewriter Sutra.  Matt has also released an album of live spoken word poetry, entitled What You Will Need in Class Today.  His poetry has appeared in Illuminations: An International Magazine of Contemporary Writing, Hand in Hand: Poets Respond to Race, and IndieFeed: Performance Poetry.  His poem "Dear Officer: A Poem for Walter Scott" was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Matt has performed in coffee shops, classrooms, and poetry venues across the country.  In Charleston, Matt is a co-organizer of The Unspoken Wordpoetry series, which hosts monthly open mics, poetry slams, and readings by featured poets.  He is the 2017 Holy City Grand Slam Champion and was a member of the Holy City Slam Team that competed in the 2014 Southern Fried Poetry Slam.  His work in the Charleston community was recently featured in the Charleston City Paper.

Matt is deeply passionate about helping people nurture their creative gifts. In 2017, he launched Contribute Your Verse, a coaching program for creative writers utilizing workshops and 1-on-1 personal coaching. In 2014, he founded Holy City Youth Slam, which hosts creative writing workshops and poetry slam competitions for young people in the Charleston area.  

This may be one of my favorite episodes to date. I'm excited to share this conversation with you. 

Erin and I talk about drug addiction, exercise addiction, disordered eating, the beginning of recovery, more full recovery and using the tools found in the recovery process not just for recovery but for being a better person and living a better life…because recovery is a piece of her story but it doesn't define who she is.

Erin shares her journey from her rock bottom into health, wellbeing, and the helpful and healthful coping mechanisms that she's learned and implemented along the way.

We talk about the benefit of community and finding connection with people that are little further along down the path of recovery as well as the importance of sharing our stories responsibly.

We also get into the complicated topics of struggling, recovering, and inspiring others in their recovery in the age of social media.

Today's episode of Stand Up Break Free is especially close to my heart. I met today's guest, Anna Ward, when she was a teacher at my son's preschool. Over the years, she and I have worked together in so many ways.

She's one of my all-time favorite mentoring alums. She's the magic behind the photo that is featured on the cover of my book and so many of the photos that can be found on my website, in my home, and in the homes of many of my friends and family members.

Anna has a way about her that inspires a beautiful feeling of both contented calm and effervescent excitement in all who share space with her. She embodies "being present" in each moment in an incredibly inspiring way.

Her work is soulful, organic, and truly representative of the essence of the little moments and big events that she photographs. She has a beautiful way of catching the moments in between. It's those moments, the one's that you'd never think to ask someone to photograph, that hold such unfiltered beauty. Those are the moments that hold the memories, the stories, and specialness of the people, places, and events.

In 2015, Anna debuted her first solo show "Girls in a Straight Line" in Charleston, SC. The "Girls in a Straight Line" series showcases a beautiful combination of story and aesthetic commenting on the power of women.
