Mary welcomes back JB Hixson today to discuss discipleship. What does it mean to disciple, or be discipled? And why didn’t Jesus say, “go and make converts“? Much of the church equates the two but they are not the same concept.  What exactly is a disciple? If we start there, it will be easier to define discipleship; but the general idea at some juncture is about a relationship, and from that comes a life-long process of learning, and growing, and resembling Jesus. Considering the seemingly stunted growth of so many church-goers, we might be able to deduct that in addition to a lack of Bible knowledge, there is little to no discipling going on, and where there is, depth is lacking. What are some of the ways the church can rectify this? How can we be more engaged with one another instead of disengaged? How does it translate into making disciples of all nations?  Converts, yes. Disciples, yes. The church needs to get busy on the Great Commission! A thoughtful hour with JB.

On today’s podcast Tim and Mary look at several interesting news items for these last days. Jesus warns specifically in Matthew 24 that there will be false christs and false messiahs at the end of the age. Since he tells us they will be multiple, sometimes we might just brush off anyone who has an agenda, roll our eyes, and move on. But He tells us that for a reason; each fake prophet tells us a bit more about what these men will be like, and therefore, what to look for. A Muslim man has come out since Easter claiming to be the Messiah of the world, and so we will look at his agenda. Remember, the world will ultimately be neck deep in deception so that alone makes it an important topic to help us warn others.  Also, a look at some disturbing anti-semitic developments which also prove that this eternal hatred is going on and more mainstream than ever before. We also look at a tech billionaire’s dream of an AI army, China’s alarming population plummet, and a few random items of interest. All in a day’s work, seeing what the world is up to in the last of the last days. Stay alert!

Mary welcomes back Mike Gendron of Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries to talk about the intricacies of electing a pope, the response of the world, and why Protestants seem so enamored with the process. Watching the larger than life media makes one wonder why the talking heads and random celebrities even care about the process, or what that religious system believes. One gets the impression they wish they could have some sort of influence but of course that’s never going to be possible. We also talk about Catholic eschatology, and how to have meaningful conversations with Catholics who are most likely to be ferocious defenders of what they believe, for various reasons. Many of us have a great mission field with Catholicism and it’s wise to armour up about what they believe and why – and the spiritual stronghold it is. A helpful – and hopeful – hour.

How many films have we watched in which the plot gets so bogged down you want to run from the theater? We might even know how it ends, “predictably” even, but things get so complicated in the middle you wonder if it will ever be resolved. As Bible students watching the Mideast, we often feel that way, especially with our current admin believing that everything is resolvable ultimately. Simplistic perhaps, especially where God’s acreage is concerned. Today we welcome back John Haller and try and make sense of all the plot twists. I know I am really having trouble following, and if you feel that way, you are not alone. Bring popcorn. Topics include the first Syrian visit with the US in 25 years; what Trump is hoping for following their protracted war. We also look at the Gulf Cooperation Summit and the big price tag on defensive weaponry that Gulf States are shopping for. Saudi has a big desert city in their sights, is it even possible to finish this incredibly ambitious project? We talk mostly Mideast today, and it’s been a whirlwind week.

Mary takes on the latest “marking” technology by taking a road trip into the late 1990s and early ’00s,  looking at the history of implanted tech – and why 1999 chip rumours of mass implantations are obsolete. Remember when tattoos were back-alley statements? It wasn’t that long ago that they were frowned upon for “decent moral people”. But things have changed in the land of all things “cool”, and now smart tattoos are nearly here. We also look at the latest updates regarding Islam’s growth in Texas, and who is finally getting involved. With the story of Islamic communities springing up hitting the mainstream, it looks like it has the attention of state and federal authorities finally. Then we look at the rumour mill swirling about Israel, suggesting that the POTUS is no longer tight with our only real Mideast ally. The “art of the deal” – that’s what Trump does best, and it’s not a lazy summer game of checkers – it’s chess, and it’s sophisticated. Lots to talk about on this edition of Stand Up for the Truth.

Tim and Mary Danielsen talk about the long-term value to learning how to study the Scriptures via the inductive study method. What is inductive bible study? Observing, interpreting, and applying Scriptures is a skill within every believer’s reach, and with a bit of work yields remarkable results as we learn to hold the Scriptures in high esteem, and yield ourselves to what we learn so that we can realize the transformed life. Maybe you have done mostly a type of devotional study but feel like there is something missing in your studies. There is nothing wrong with a devotional approach – but once you learn these skills you probably won’t look at any passage of Scripture the same ever again. If your goal is to go much deeper into the Word and glean some remarkable truths, we encourage you to give a listen and see if inductive bible study is for you or your church group. We talk about how to observe any text, how to do word studies (no, you need not be a Greek or Hebrew scholar), the place for commentaries, and how to interpret and apply to be faithful to the whole counsel of God’s Word.

Mary welcomes back Israel expert Jim Fletcher to help us both celebrate and articulate what it means that this regathered nation is 77 years old this week. Today we talk about some significant prophecies in Ezekiel and Amos, and the absolute promises of God to regather and redeem Israel. For what purpose? Not only for His good pleasure, that His people are the apple of His eye, but for the reasons stated in Ezekiel 37: “That they may know….” There are 58 such mentions from Ezekiel 34-39 alone. It’s for HIS Name’s sake. Then we look at the Cyrus Cylinder and archaeology as apologetic. Who wrote Isaiah? If you have to ask, we will give an answer. Finally, we answer the the question, “What is Israel?” If churches won’t teach prophecy because of a few who mishandle it, they could at least teach God’s plan for Israel of the ages, which should build our faith. As Psalm 102:16 tells us, “For the Lord shall build up Zion; He shall appear in His glory.” Now THAT’s glorious.  Jim’s Israel blog is called “The God That Answers“.
