Standardization vs. Flexibility on Processes: How to find a balance?

  1. Requirements (outside of your control) might keep changing, and standardization can be disturbed by Govt Regulations, Competitors, or evolving Customer Needs.
  2. Standardization can be compared to the organic process of Osmosis: the process is pretty standardized, but the leaves will only suck in the amount of nutrients and water required, the moment the sun sets the process stops.
  3. After process is standardized, Organizations cannot afford to turn a blind eye to evolving customer needs. System must be able to adapt to changes and accept and adopt changes that come in as feedback from the ground (people actually interacting with customers).
  4. Flexibility and Standardization need to Dovetail into each other. Basic Standardization is always required, but mature organizations always allow for a continuous enhancement of the process based on learnings.
