Midwestern State is making its third-ever appearance in the national semifinals and reached the NCAA DII Men's Soccer Final Four for the first time since 2010.
The Mustangs advanced with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory at Point Loma in the Super Region 4 final in San Diego on Saturday afternoon. It was the second extra-time victory for Midwestern State in the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship. Parker Plaxco, Gabriel Gacovicaj and Dereck Espinal scored for the Mustangs. Espinal scored the game-winner in the eighth minute of overtime, and the "golden goal" propelled Midwestern State into the national semifinals.
Midwestern State faces a fourth opponent that it has not faced before in the tournament as the No. 3-seeded Mustangs tangle with second-seeded Southern New Hampshire on Friday night at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
The Penmen have shutout their first three opponents in the tournament and defeated Gannon in the Super Region 1 final, 5-0.
