Today we wonder why God persists in being reliable and trustworthy during the many times that we let him down - all the times we prove our unreliableness and trust-worthlessness (is that a word?). There is never a time we can't turn to God and put our trust in him and his mercy. How many times could he turn to us and do the same?

Today we re-join the series that we started earlier in 2026, looking at the apostle Paul's letter to the newish church in Rome, the capital of the empire in which he lived. Some of the church's members are Jews who (like many of us) think that they know how everyone should live. Paul has some tough words for them - "you don't even manage to keep your own rules for living, so how do you expect to others to manage? Everyone needs changing from the inside. Changing outward behaviour doesn't cut with God."

You'd be surprised if someone told you that a dead person had come alive again ... and so were several of the people in today's account of the life of Jesus. But Jesus, who had been dead, wasn't anymore! And he kept appearing when least expected. He still does that today.

It was the worst of days ... and yet it was the best of days. The worst of days for the innocent Jesus Christ as he was crucified and had to bear the wrath of God Almighty. The best of days for every guilty human who is trusting him for rescue from the pain, suffering and condemnation that he suffered in their place. Horror & Hallelujah!

Jesus is on trial on an obviously trumped-up charge. Will Jesus be found innocent? Of course not! The truth is too uncomfortable and too challenging for the accusers and judges to have to face ... because they would have to say "we're the guilty ones, not him". It's the same today - you and I are guilty, not him. But that's usually too much of a challenge to accept.

Jesus Christ's agony as he was crucified and died was agony unimaginable. Yet, many readers of the Bible argue that he suffered even more when he wrestled with God in prayer just before his arrest and assassination. Certainly, Luke's record of the last hours of Jesus' life on earth makes a harrowing read. But how amazing that Jesus went through all this for anyone who repents of their own wilfulness and trusts him for salvation!

After a break over the summer, we're returning to our series based on Luke's account of the life of Jesus Christ on Earth. He's getting close to the end, for today we hear about his final meal with his friends and his betrayal by one of them. Today, every true Christian is his friend ... and every true Christian is sure to have betrayed that friendship more than once. How would you describe yourself?

It's our Week-of-Prayer and to get us started we're reminding ourselves who is the Church's builder (the builder of our church and the church worldwide). It's God himself; and we are Jesus Christ's church. So we're asking him: "Please, build your church". We're wasting our time if he doesn't, but involved in the greatest construction project ever if we're praying for his work. Will you join in?

The end is nigh! The writer of this part of the Bible records Jesus as saying "Be always alert and pray that you may be able to escape all that is to happen ... and able to stand before me". That's how Jesus warned his listeners almost 2000 years ago and his warning to us hasn't changed.
