Star Wars 7x7: A Daily Bite-Sized Dose of Star Wars Joy

Lucasfilm announced today that Jon Favreau will be executive producing and writing a new Star Wars live-action TV series for Disney's upcoming "direct-to-consumer" (aka streaming) service. Let's talk about the details, including when we might expect to see its debut... Punch it!

How the creative team manages to skirt around that thing about how the Rebels first major victory was The Battle of Scarif is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the final episode of Star Wars Rebels is concerned. Part 2 of "Family Reunion - and Farewell" closed some loops, left others tantalizingly open, and showed how much Ezra Bridger has grown over the years. Punch it!

The pieces are all on the board, and the final plan is set in motion. I'm talking about part 1 of "Family Reunion - and Farewell," the series finale of Star Wars Rebels. Not only does Ezra's plan fail, but it plays right into Thrawn's hands. And the parallels between this episode and Return of the Jedi - straightforward and with various inversions - are more than a little remarkable. Punch it!

While borrowing from - and sometimes reversing - scenarios from both Return of the Jedi and J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, Dave Filoni and crew created a memorable send-off for the Ghost team that was uniquely Star Wars Rebels, too. "Family Reunion - and Farewell" are the 15th and 16th episodes of the season, and the final episodes of this series. Punch it!

The title, a line taken from a Gandalf line in The Return of the King, evokes the folly of what the scant rebel contingent on Lothal is trying to pull off. And this is their Minas Tirith moment, with the last citadel of freedom and safety being assaulted by the might of the Empire. It's "A Fool's Hope," episode 14 from season 4 of Star Wars Rebels. And in this briefing, I'll freely admit that they had me fooled about former Lothal governor-turned-rebel Ryder Azadi. Punch it!

The spoilers are already out there, but they're not in here. On today's episode, I'm taking one last look at the footage we already have - from the midseason trailer, the teaser at the end of the last episode of Rebels Recon, and the "Let's Do This" sizzle video that debuted on the Star Wars YouTube channel a few days ago. Just by looking at those three pieces, it's pretty clear how the events of the series finale can be broken up into thirds themselves, one part each per episode for these last three experiences with the Ghost crew as we know them now. Punch it!

With four nominations and zero wins, The Last Jedi was shut out of the Oscar celebration on Sunday night. And this would be the seventh Star Wars production in a row from Lucasfilm to be shut out from the annual awards - a streak now spanning 37 years. Since the last winner was Best Sound Mixing for The Empire Strikes Back, it makes a person wonder: How much might this have to do with Hollywood holding a grudge against Lucasfilm and George Lucas over the opening crawl that caused Lucas to pay a $25,000 fine and quit the Director's Guild? Punch it!

This may be the longest interview I've ever done! On today's podcast, I'm sharing a snippet of an interview from the Star-B-Q Podcast, on one of their "Nibblers" episodes. Ironic, in a sense, since the full interview goes for two hours! For the snippet you'll hear here, I'm talking with their co-host Fode (yes, as in podrace announcers Fode and Beed) about Force users and non-users, and how the notion of being in a "flow state" is similar to what non-Force-users might be experiencing in the Star Wars universe. Punch it!

Could Ahsoka Tano make an appearance in Star Wars Rebels during the series finale on Monday, March 5? I'm looking back at the 10-card Topps series from the Star Wars Card Trader app released in 2016, and discussed by Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration Europe. Ahsoka's fate after her showdown with Darth Vader in "Twilight of the Apprentice" was mysteriously hinted at in those cards. And after last week's "A World Between Worlds" episode of Rebels, we may now know more about her post-Vader-fight time than ever before. Punch it!

Del Rey's latest timeline tells us nothing new about Solo: A Star Wars Story (even though a bunch of folks seem to think it does). We've learned more, in fact, from the news about the Solo publishing initiative courtesy of Lucasfilm's Michael Siglain, and from a brief excerpt of the upcoming Han and Lando novel. Also, Episode IX's script is finished, and could Leia be re-cast for IX? Punch it?
