  • From Tasmania to Black Star: A Listener’s Story

In this episode, MJ chats with Bradley from Tasmania, a long-time Black Star listener tuning in from one of the most remote parts of the country.

Living on Tasmania’s rugged west coast, Bradley shares what life is like in a region known for its dairy industry, commercial fishing, and dramatic landscapes.

The conversation touches on everything from calamari fishing and the disappearance of kelp off Tasmania’s west coast to the challenges facing regional industries.

Bradley also reflects on the news that Tasmania’s iconic Boag's Brewery will cease brewing operations in Launceston, and what the loss means for many locals who have grown up with the brand.

It's a fascinating conversation that offers a glimpse into life on the other side of the country, and a reminder of the connections radio can create across Australia.

  • Fibre: The Most Overlooked Part of a Healthy Diet

In this episode, MJ speaks with Gerald Quigley, pharmacist and Master Herbalist, about why fibre may be one of the most important, and most overlooked, parts of our diet.

Gerald explains how modern eating habits have shifted us away from many of the fibre-rich foods our grandparents ate, and why that change may be contributing to digestive health issues.

The conversation explores how fibre supports digestion, helps keep the gut functioning efficiently, and can be found in everyday foods such as wholegrains, oats, fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Gerald also shares why looking after your gut may have benefits beyond digestion, with growing evidence linking gut health to overall wellbeing.

    • Could Your Medication Be Affecting Your Energy?

This week on Stars and Stories, Gerald Quigley explains why vitamin B12 is essential — and how some common medications may lower your levels.

Vitamin B12 plays a role in:

      • Brain function and concentration

      • Energy levels

      • Nerve health

Certain medications, including those used for diabetes and reflux, can reduce B12 over time.

For some people, symptoms like low energy or poor focus may be linked — but go unnoticed.

Gerald’s advice is simple: if you’re on these medications, it’s worth checking your levels with your GP.
