1LT Casteel's story takes us from the quiet mountain town of Oakland, Maryland, to the dangerous skies over the South Pacific during World War II. It is the story of First Lieutenant Carroll Wesley Casteel — known to friends and family as “Sparky” — a newspaper editor, Scoutmaster, and Army Air Forces navigator whose final mission ended above the jungles of New Guinea in August 1942.

Lost in bad weather, forced to bail out over one of the most unforgiving landscapes in the world, Casteel and the crew of the “Yankee Clipper” faced a fight for survival that would become part tragedy, part mystery, and part legend. Some of the men made it out alive. Carroll Casteel never returned home.

This is the story of courage, uncertainty, and a family that waited years for answers.

On May 15, 1944 he departed on what would be his last mission.
