  • Your First Play: Re-Entering Your Life Before You Feel Ready

    You survived Shock.

You worked your way through Limbo.

Now comes the part that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable: living again.

In this week's episode of Start Your Comeback, Toni begins the five-week ReEntry series with a personal look at what her own ReEntry actually looked like after divorce and becoming an empty nester.

It wasn't the day the divorce became final.

It began in a nearly empty apartment filled with hand-me-down furniture and one unexpected realization:

    She wanted to be lighter.

Toni shares what happened when freedom finally arrived, but she wasn't quite sure what to do with it, why staying constantly busy became a way to avoid loneliness, and how she slowly began discovering who she was outside the life she'd known for 25 years.

    You'll hear:

    • Why Reentry is different from simply surviving a transition
    • How busyness can sometimes disguise loneliness
    • Why freedom can initially feel uncomfortable
    • What it means to start participating in your life again
    • Why readiness does not mean fearlessness
    • How to choose one small action instead of trying to reinvent your whole life
    • Why your first play matters more than having the entire game plan

    This Week's Challenge

    Ask yourself:

What is one thing I know I'm ready to try even if I have to do it afraid?

    • How to recognize how much has changed in you
    • Who and what belongs in your Comeback Toolbox
    • The importance of safe people, healthy practices, boundaries, and truth

  • The Next Right Step

What if the next step in your comeback feels less like a confident stride and more like stepping onto a tightrope?

In this final episode of the five-week Limbo series, Toni talks about courage, fear, movement, and what it really means to take the next right step.

You do not need the whole plan.

You do not need to feel fearless.

And you do not need to know exactly where the second, fifth, or tenth step will lead.

You simply need enough courage for the step in front of you.

    In This Episode

    Toni talks about:

    • Why Limbo can feel like walking a tightrope
    • Why courage does not require fear to disappear
    • How small steps create real momentum
    • Why the next right step may be quieter than you expect
    • How fear can keep us waiting for certainty that may never come
    • Why Ruth’s “as it happened” moment is such a powerful picture of movement
    • How reflection can eventually turn into avoidance
    • Why Limbo was never meant to become your permanent address
    • How the next right step becomes the bridge into Reentry

    The Big Takeaway

Let fear be the losing opponent today.

    Then move.

  • Coaching Through Limbo: Sometimes You Just Need the Right Timeout

When you are standing in the middle of a major life transition, it can be hard to see what is really happening.

You are managing the emotions, the fear, the decisions, the finances, the family dynamics, and everything else life is throwing at you.

Sometimes you are simply too close to the game to see the whole court.

In this episode of Start Your Comeback, Toni shares the story of a basketball game in 1993 when one timeout and one adjustment changed the momentum of the entire game.

That story became a powerful picture of what coaching through Limbo can look like.

You may not need 50 changes.

You may not need to blow up your entire life.

You may simply need someone on the sideline who can help you see what you cannot see yet.

    In This Episode

    Toni talks about:

    • Why it is hard to see clearly when you are in the middle of a transition
    • The difference between coaching and simply giving advice
    • Why good coaches ask questions instead of handing out answers
    • How fear can disguise itself as confusion
    • Why friends are valuable but are not always coaches
    • How coaching can help separate facts from fear
    • Why accountability sometimes matters more than reassurance
    • How one small adjustment can change the momentum of your comeback
    • Why coaching is not meant to create long-term dependency
    • How to identify the next play without having the entire game plan

If you are in Limbo and tired of circling the same questions, second-guessing every decision, or trying to figure out your next season alone, this is exactly the kind of work Toni does with her coaching clients.

    Coaching can help you:

    • identify what is actually keeping you stuck
    • separate facts from fear
    • recognize patterns you may not be able to see yourself
    • determine what is within your control
    • make decisions with greater clarity
    • identify your next step

If that sounds like where you are right now, come sit with me.

If you are not ready for one-on-one coaching but want help working through your transition, Toni’s book, Start Your Comeback, and the companion workbook, Start Your Comeback Game Plan, were created to help you begin building your own comeback one step at a time.

  • Decision Training: How to Trust Yourself Again When You Don’t Know What Comes Next

Making decisions after a major life transition can feel completely different than it used to.

Suddenly, every choice feels bigger. You second-guess yourself, ask everyone else what they think, and sometimes avoid making a decision altogether because you're afraid of getting it wrong.

In this episode of Start Your Comeback, Toni talks about why rebuilding confidence requires Decision Training—learning to make small decisions first, seek wise counsel without giving away your authority, and trust yourself to handle the outcome.

    In this episode:

    • Why not making a decision is still a decision
    • Toni's “Board of Directors” and the importance of wise counsel
    • The difference between asking for perspective and asking someone else to decide for you
    • Why small decisions help rebuild confidence
    • How to recognize when uncertainty is making you rush
    • Why your emotional capacity matters when making bigger choices
    • How thinking through the worst-case scenario can actually reduce fear
    • Why a disappointing outcome does not automatically mean you made a bad decision

    The Decision Training Framework

    The Urgency Check:
Does this decision actually need to be made today, or am I rushing it just to escape the discomfort of uncertainty?

    The Capacity Gauge:
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much emotional bandwidth do I have right now? If it is below a 5, can I give myself permission to push this decision to next week?

    The Safety Net:
What is the worst-case scenario if this decision doesn’t go the way I hope, and do I have the resilience, support, and resources to handle it?

    Remember:

You are not trying to become someone who never makes the wrong decision.

You are becoming someone who trusts herself to make the wisest decision she can, and knows she can handle what comes next.

  • Finding Your New Rhythm in Limbo

When life changes, your old routine often stops working long before you know what the new one should look like.

In this episode of Start Your Comeback, Toni talks about what happens when the shock begins to wear off and you find yourself with more unstructured time, more quiet, and a whole lot of questions about what comes next.

Limbo can tempt you in two directions: shutting down or filling every waking moment with busyness. Toni shares how she did the latter—working, volunteering, mentoring, and staying constantly occupied until exhaustion finally caught up with her.

Eventually, Limbo forces you to face an important question:

What kind of rhythm actually fits the life you are living now?

In this episode, you’ll hear about:

    • Why your old routines may no longer work in a new season
    • The difference between connection and distraction
    • Why busyness can sometimes be a way of avoiding the quiet
    • How to learn the difference between being alone and being lonely
    • Why your values should begin showing up in your calendar
    • How trial and error helps you create a healthier rhythm
    • The three R’s for navigating Limbo: Reset, Reflect, and Refocus

Toni also offers this important reminder:

Don’t allow fear to keep you holding onto something simply because it is familiar when you already know it no longer works for you.

Familiar does not always mean healthy, helpful, or right for this season.

And your new rhythm doesn’t have to look impressive.

    It needs to sustain you.

  • Limbo Is Not Failure; It's Your Training Ground

The shock may have worn off, but that does not mean the new life has arrived.

That uncomfortable space in between is what I call Limbo.

In this episode of Start Your Comeback, I’m talking about why Limbo can feel like a prison sentence and why it may actually be the training ground where some of your most important growth happens.

Whether you are walking through divorce, empty nesting, retirement, grief, job loss, or another major life transition, the middle can feel frustratingly slow. You may be doing everything you know to do and still feel like nothing is changing.

    But survival is not failure.

Sometimes getting out of bed is the step. Sometimes making the appointment is progress. Sometimes paying one bill, setting one boundary, or making one healthy decision is the entire game plan for the day.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why Limbo has no predictable timeline
    • The difference between self-reflection and self-condemnation
    • Why shame can keep you stuck long after the circumstances begin to change
    • How small wins become evidence of progress
    • Why you need wise, steady people around you during transition
    • How to stop comparing your timeline to someone else’s
    • Why Limbo may be preparing you for what comes next
    • How to focus on the next step instead of demanding the entire plan

One of the biggest lessons I learned in my own Limbo season was this:

You do not need to see the whole path to begin moving.

The work you are doing in the middle may not be visible yet, but that does not mean nothing is happening.

    You are learning.

    You are releasing.

    You are rebuilding.

    You are becoming.

And eventually, those small steps begin forming a path.

Paid subscribers to The Limbo Letters on Substack will receive this week’s Game Plan Companion: The Limbo Training Ground.

    It will help you identify:

    • What has changed
    • What is still unresolved

    • What you are learning, releasing, rebuilding, and becoming
    • One small win you may be overlooking
    • Your next play for the week

  • You Raised Them to Leave with Brenda Seefeldt

Dropping your child off at college isn't only a transition for them.

    It's a transition for you.

In this final episode of the Shock portion of our empty nesting series, I'm joined by pastor, author, speaker, and longtime youth pastor Brenda Seefeldt, who has worked with teenagers and young adults since 1981.

Brenda and I talk about what young adults are really experiencing as they leave home, why parents may be unintentionally preventing their kids from developing resilience, and why failure might be one of the greatest teachers we allow our children to have.

We also talk about the natural separation that happens between young adults and their parents, the importance of trusted adults outside the family, how faith becomes personal during the college years, and why constantly rescuing our kids can make adulthood harder instead of easier.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • Why today's young adults may feel less prepared for independence
    • The difference between protecting children from danger and protecting them from discomfort
    • Why middle school and high school are safe places to learn how to fail
    • How failure develops resilience, grit, coping skills, and confidence
    • Why ages 18–25 are naturally years of separation and identity formation
    • How a young adult's faith begins becoming their own
    • Why your teenager needs trusted adults besides Mom and Dad
    • How too much communication can make the college transition harder
    • Why parents must resist the instinct to rescue
    • The emotional growth happening in the parent after the child leaves
    • Why prayer becomes such an important part of letting go

The truth I want you to remember:

    Failure is survivable.

Failure may change the plan, but it does not eliminate God's ability to redeem the story.

Your child cannot fail so badly that they move beyond God's heart toward them.

    And neither can you.

  • They left Home, Not Your Life

Dropping a child off at college can stir up more emotion than a mother expects.

The drive home feels different. The house feels different. The relationship suddenly feels different.

But different does not mean over.

In this episode, Toni shares an important reminder for mothers walking through the shock of an empty nest:

They left home. They did not leave your life.

Your child is learning how to manage life without you handling every detail, and you are learning how to love them without managing every detail.

Neither side of that transition is always easy.

    In This Episode

    Toni discusses:

    • why sadness is a normal part of the empty-nest transition
    • the difference between grieving a season and living permanently in sadness
    • how to create a communication system without creating a surveillance system
    • why young adults need room to solve ordinary problems
    • the importance of listening before offering advice
    • why mothers must begin putting themselves back on their own calendars
    • how to step back without disappearing

A Question to Use With Your Young Adult

    Before offering solutions, ask:

“Do you want my advice, or do you just need me to listen?”

That one question can create healthier communication and give your young adult the room to become more confident and capable.

    This Week’s Game Plan Companion

Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things.

This week’s paid-subscriber Game Plan Companion will help you:

    • name what feels hardest about this transition
    • create a healthy communication rhythm
    • identify where you may need to loosen your grip
    • choose one meaningful activity to put back on your calendar
    • create one practical comeback play for the week ahead

The Game Plan Companion is available through The Limbo Letters on Substack.

    Coming Next Week

Next week, Toni will be joined by a young adult pastor to explore this transition from the other side.

    They will discuss:

    • what young adults may experience when they leave home
    • what they still need from their parents
    • how parents can stay connected without overstepping
    • what well-meaning parents may need to stop doing

  • The Identity Inside The Noise: Finding Yourself After the Empty Nest

When the house becomes quiet, many mothers begin asking a question they were not prepared to answer:

    Who am I now?

For years, motherhood provided structure, responsibility, connection, and purpose. Then the children leave, the schedules change, and the daily noise disappears.

In this episode, Toni explores why your identity was never actually lost, it simply became quieter while everyone else needed something.

You do not need to invent an entirely new woman. You need to become reacquainted with the woman who was there all along.

    In This Episode

Toni shares six practical ways to begin rediscovering and engaging your identity after the children leave home:

    1. Name what you miss beyond simply missing your children.
    2. Recognize the skills and strengths that remain.
    3. Notice which parts of yourself have been waiting.
    4. Experiment with new experiences before declaring a “new you.”
    5. Build evidence of who you are becoming.
    6. Allow motherhood to evolve from managing to supporting.

You will also hear why identity is often discovered through action rather than endless thinking and why your years of raising children gave you valuable skills that can now be used in a different way.

    A Question to Consider

What part of me has been quiet while I was busy raising everyone else?

Write down whatever comes to mind.

Then choose one small action that would allow that part of you to speak again.
