Publicly-traded healthcare company HealthStream has acquired NurseGrid, a Portland, Ore.-based startup that develops software and apps for nurses.

Founded in 2013, NurseGrid sells staffing and scheduling software built for nurses.

There are more than 260,000 monthly active users on NurseGrid, which offers both the app and NurseGrid Enterprise, a SaaS-based product for nurse managers.

“NurseGrid has an incredibly active and engaged community of nurses who have made our app part of their routine,” NurseGrid CEO Rob MacNaughton said in a statement.

“We value the community of nurses using NurseGrid and believe that, together, HealthStream and NurseGrid can bring more value to nurses and the healthcare organizations they work for,” HealthStream CEO Robert A. Luckily, a startup called Slightly Robot had already developed a wristband to stop another type of harmful touching — trichotillomania, a disorder that compels people to pull out their hair.

So over the last week, Slightly Robot redesigned their wearable as the Immutouch, a wristband that vibrates if you touch your face.

“A problem the size of COVID-19 requires everyone to do their part, large or small,” says Slightly Robot co-founder Matthew Toles.

Unlike a venture-backed startup beholden to generating returns for investors, Slightly Robot was funded through a small grant from the University of Washington in 2016 and bootstrapped since.

Version One Ventures just launched the “Version One Opportunity Fund,” an $18 million ($25 million CAD) investment vehicle that lets the firm continue backing existing portfolio companies.

It focuses on four geographies — Vancouver, B.C., Silicon Valley, Toronto/Waterloo, and Seattle — and announced a $45 million fund, its third, in 2018.

The Opportunity Fund will help address those situations.

Seattle-based firm Madrona Venture Group launched its own Opportunity Fund last year.
