It's 1604, captain and crew are traversing the Atlantic, the night is calm and the sky is starry and clear. Captain sets the ship's course, using constellations as his guide. Suddenly, a bright new star appears on the horizon. What might it be?

When an impatient bunch of interstellar travelers try to explain their search for "rings" to Starwhale his curiosity gets the best of him and he's off to a planetary system to find out what all the hubbub is about.

In a big universe there are a lot of galaxies and stars and a LOT (trillions upon trillions) of planets. And these trillions of planets, some are like overbaked or underbaked cookies, too hot and too cold for life. Starwhale explores the planets and learns that some are baked just right.

When a planet zips by Starwhale during interstellar travel to a nearby star he puts on the brakes and attempts to find it. It's no easy task and what he discovers astounds him.

Although it looks the same from a distance, there's something different about this planet Starwhale just discovered. It's mass isn't normal and neither are its inhabitants!

Starwhale finds a cozy, warm start to orbit but he's seen this star before, long before it was even a star.

Starwhale and his new friend are preparing for the New Year celebrations when an urgent message calls him away. He promises to be back in time for the festivities and keeps his promise but learns a valuable, poignant lesson about space and time.

Space is mostly, well, space. What are the chances the beautiful blue planet Starwhale has just discovered--with all of its life--might be in the path of a giant asteroid? Slim. But possible. And when he spots an asteroid headed toward it he does what he can to save the planet. There are some sad parts to this story but a happy outcome in the end.

Starwhale drifts into sleep and dreams of a 2D civilization. He tries to make contact but the conversation gets lost between the dimensions. A little sad, he turns and leaves, only to encounter something from another dimension beyond his own--learning empathy for the second dimension and a bit about the 4th and other dimensions in the process.

Starwhale has some questions about the size and state of the universe after a chat with a civilization about the fixed nature of the stars and galaxies. He heads out on a series of races to distant galaxies and makes some surprising discoveries.
