Publisher's Summary:
Arizona is a land of beauty, racial diversity, and politics. Arizona is a land of poverty and great riches. Arizona is out of money. What happens now? The state has told the Federal Government it no longer wants Federal dollars. They have taken control of their destiny under the velvet collar of the Constitution of the United States. The borders are theirs to control, education is theirs to control, and some people don't like the change. What happens now?

Happy immersed!
State of Defense reads like a cross between and Ayn Rand novel and a modern western. It has the fierce independence and hopeful goal of liberty despite the obstacles and oppositions while avoiding the postmodernist deconstruction of the heroes, ideologies, and events. Like Ayn Rand and many westerns, there is a certain melodrama and larger than life style to the characters and events, with a little bit of the "don't look behind the curtain" handwavium that glosses over realism in favor of moving the story along. It is refreshing and beneficial to both the reader and the story. It took me back not only to the joy of discovering Ayn Rand (even though I am jaded to her now), but also the joy of Robert Heinlein's youthful and hopeful fiction of libertarian independence and the celebration of lives that will not submit to mediocrity or majority rule. It may not be every ones' cup of tea, and the snooty types might balk at either the very occasional typo, or the simplicity of the heroes' commitment to their ideals, or the melodramatic style that might not seem 'realistic' compared to the postmodern grittiness of 'hard' novels. The heroes of this book, if they were real, would not care. Nor would it to those that this novel speaks deeply to. It spoke deeply to me in the very midst of its fun-loving, easy reading, unbridled hopefulness. I look forward to the next installment.
Wonder what would happen if this actually came about
It started out slow but got interestng about mid-way through.

Doug Ball hit the nail on the head with this novel. What would happen if a state actually had a governor that had the guts to refuse all federal aid with strings attached and close its borders? Well written with a lot of thought put into the consequences of such an action. I would recommend to anyone who wants a good adventure sprinkled with the politics of said actions.
Fantastic read!
Really enjoyed it! Could not put it down. A great story about what should be current events.
