Hmmmmm . . . .

Good enough writing. Rather bland in some way I can't quite put my finger on. Listened to 1 hour but not interesting enough to continue.

very enjoyable psychological thriller!

Woman of the dead took me a while to get into but as the story unfolded it had me hooked. I found myself eager for the next victim of the murderer to meet their demise. A few twists and turns that i almost didn't see coming. All in all a great listen.

A Delight with a Light Touch

I'm so glad that I decided to have a listen to a new author with Helen Cadbury's 'To Catch A Rabbit'. This was a police procedural from a fresh and refreshing angle. Our heroes are a humble PCSO who lives with his nan, a fast track SOCO excluded from the team and an admin worker at an immigration charity. With peripheral players at the centre of the action, the usual view of a detective thriller shifts - to very good effect. I did get a little lost with a change of time and place at one point - but I decided that was a good thing, I had to keep paying attention. I am very surprised at this being a first novel. There's a deft and confidence that seems very assured. I loved the light and sometimes almost whimsical tone that the story has - it's consistent through the whole book and helped me to feel submerged in the story. Jonathan Keeble did a sterling job at performing the wide range of characters. I'm going to give it a second listen, to see if the dream that one of the characters had makes any more sense - or if it was just the rabbit!

Fantastic

From beginning to end this story was gripping and beautifully written.

The narrator is incredible at giving tge characters identity with believable accents....except for the scouse one (sorry Jonathan). Each character he brings alive like no other narrator that I've listened to does. All who narrate books should listen to this chap and learn from his art.

The story has wonderful twists and turns throughout and without my revealing the plot it has an unsuspected ending.

Well worth buying and I'd highly recommend you listen to other books read by Jonathan Keeble.

10/10 from me for both Helen and Jonathan.

London, 1959: Gay love was illegal but spaghetti on toast wasn't

John Wilmot is a beautiful youth who catches the eye and then the heart of a successful artist, Oliver Cambourne. Wilmot is a man with eye fixed steadily on the main chance and moves effortlessly from the life of bookshop clerk to one in which expensive gifts, spur-of-the-moment travels, and the Chelsea Arts Ball are a matter of course. After spending less than a year with Cambourne, he spots an even better opportunity. He grabs it, and the consequences of his doing so leave many people, sooner or later, feeling shattered.

In the long denouement we see Wilmot being denied, and denying himself of, the assurance of a life funded lavishly by others. Gradually, though, he appropriates ever larger bits of Cambourne's past, and the book's ending leaves him with the possibility of his worming his way back into the good graces of yet another benefactor. That's a cynical reading; the author of the introduction to the novel sees Wilmot redeeming himself in this part of the book, and so might you. It's just as likely that Benatar's intention was somewhere between the two.

This sort of ambiguity is one of the things I particularly like about the novel; so are some very well-drawn characters; the understated way in which Wilmot lays claim to first Cambourne's trinkets, then his actions, and then more still; and, similarly, the slow revelation of a major character's (Elizabeth's) true nature and motives. In fact, the story in general is told with a refreshing subtlety--I can easily imagine other writers playing up the drama in it and in the process making the story itself feel implausible. A few minor drawbacks caught my notice: There's very occasionally a slight awkwardness, mostly in diction but once or twice in phrasing, that suggest that the novel might have benefitted from one final polishing, and though Wilmot does seem as blithely oblivious as ever of others' feelings till very late in the book, his financial sacrifice and his reactions near the end make it almost seem as if Benatar couldn't make up his own mind about whether he had in the end reformed or simply regrouped. I'm glad of there being no clear-cut explanation, but there's a sense of to-and-fro'ing rather than a consistently smooth presentation of Wilmot's behaviour in the last part of the novel.

A very good book, and if you like it try Benatar's Wish Her Safe at Home, which to me is even better.

Highly Recommended Reading

The Man on the Bridge is timeless and relevant to all who love their partners, friends, and family, and sometimes question their love for them. Professional ambition, financial security, freedom for creativity, honesty, and protecting those you love, and oneself from those who love you, are underlying themes that are reflected in this punchy, real, and stylish narrative based in 1960s London. I highly recommend Stephen Benatar's book to all who need a refreshing book that meditates on who we are and think we are. - U.

A Lornographic corn field, indeed!

This story is part of the anthology Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror but its available by itself on Audible.com.

Set in Edward Lorns fictional town of Bays End, a new Halloween attraction, The Scare Rows, has come to town. People are excited and interested; however, soon they will be horrified or dead.

Mr. Stuart Keane has brought his attraction to town. He says hes from Lubbock, but he doesnt really know since his memory is a short and questionable thing. He wanders about Bays End handing out tickets to his attraction.

Sara and Scott are out that night for a bit of fun, or arguing, the two mixing together. They go play in a cornfield and something rather unmentionable happens to Sara. Those that knew her begin to forget her. Scott and his pitbull, Little Scott, are hired by Mr. Keane to provide security for Keens attraction while he finishes setting it up.

The attraction finally opens on Halloween and at first, it is everything and a bit more than folks were expecting. Pretty soon things turn messy as the more fantastical elements of the attraction come to life and take their toll. At first, I was a little horrified and this pleased me because this is a horror story. However, things did get a little repetitive. Corn was a major theme and so once I saw one corn monster, the others werent that scary nor were they unexpected.

The tale did end on a strong note, with some mystery left. Bays End will have to pull itself together, again.

Narration: Commodore James did a great job with this book. He had a handful of accents to do, and he did them well. I also liked his arguing couple Scott and James.

Hard to understand why this was published

This book was so poorly written, it was hard to understand how it got published. The premise seemed interesting and the cover art arresting, but the contents were a complete dud.

She has a nice life living in New York and is married to ...

his debut novel started out so strong and hooked me quickly, but then slowly became confusing and outlandish as well.

Mugure is an expat from Kenya now living in the US. She has a nice life living in New York and is married to Zack, a successful attorney that she met while working at his law firm. When the couple is unable to conceive a child they adopt a little two-year old boy named Kobi.

One day several years after the adoption, she takes her husband's car instead of her own she finds a piece of paper with her son's name and a phone number on it. She's curious, but it isn't until later when she is searching for something in the office that she finds another suspicious bit of information with similar info that makes her question whether her husband and the agency that handled the adoption might just be hiding something from her.

Unable to leave her happy life in Riverdale, NY as is, she begins her own private investigation involving her best friend Melinda, who was once married to Zack's friend, a man who went from rags to riches supposedly in the landscaping business, but may have been involved in transporting illegal immigrants for a fee as well.

In her sleuthing she finds the adoption agency has closed it's doors seemingly overnight and is now a curio shop. Her amateur investigation takes her from soccer mom to all sorts of dangerous people and locales, including a trip back to Kenya to find out more about her son and the truth about his adoption.

The story was riveting in parts, yet so far-fetched and all over the map at times that it became hard to follow.

Unusual.

This was an unusual story. It's more like a couple of journal entries or recollections from a young girl's diary and only one major scene in it with a bunch of smaller scenes happening throughout the story and even throughout the major scene. Completely different than what I thought it would be.

Wow this book scales high on the crazy ohmmeter

Not quit sure I understood this book and I have no desire to re listen to it. The story came off as diary of young girls memories which include an unhinged mother guns and murder. I am new to reading books by VJ Banister. This is my second and I enjoyed it very much. Could not put it down!!!
