Slow and predictable

Very slow going.....Characters go from place to place and eat and talk, over and over. Gradually a little more is revealed, and finally the case is solved very predictably.

Caught Dead

I received a copy of this novel from Poisoned Pen Press in exchange for a review. My copy is an ARC so there is a chance that the subject matter I talk about in this review will not have any relevance to your own copy. That aside I liked this book, the character is from a heritage I'm unfamiliar with, their was a simple yet complex mystery going on, and it's overall pretty well written.

Caught dead is centered around Rick Van Lam, mostly an insurance fraud investigator, until someone in the Vietnamese community is the victim of murder. One of the beautiful Le sisters is dead. The police are ready to just write it off as gang violence but then the other Le sister dies in the exact spot a while later. Now the question is why would these woman go to a place where shooting happen all the time and so far away from their homes? That's when Rick Van Lam officially assigns himself to the case. During the case he uncovers simmering family feuds, jealous children, and racism.

The book immerses you in the Vietnamese culture, from the foods to racism that is an ongoing thing. Our main character refers to himself as a dust boy, because his mother was Vietnamese and his father was a faceless American Soldier. He receives a lot of hatred because of this, but it does give us a better perspective into the culture and to our main character.

Like most mystery books this one will keep you guessing until the end. The one think I didn't like about this is that it gave us a lot of half facts about what was going on. Although we knew when Rick knew so this could attest to being more to be being based on the main character. But still I like having the opportunity to figure it all out for myself.

I liked that our main character was still good friends with his ex-wife.

If would want to better understand the Corps and why Marines at all ranks both active duty and reserve are willing to risk everything for honor, Corps and fellow Marines READ THIS NOVEL!!!

From first page to last you will not be able to put this book down, The characters... the judge advocates, staff officers, grunts, the generals, civilian reporters and yes even the Iraqis are real...they literally step off the pages... in fact they haunted my dreams for weeks. Colonel Stone captures the danger, confusion and exhilaration of the battlefield and the very essence of why Marines enjoy an unparalleled reputation as the nation's finest, most determined and feared fighters.

This book confirms the wisdom of the Corps requiring all judge advocates to be unrestricted line officers. This is not only a page turner but rather a page burner! Semper Fi Colonel Stone!

Even a tree-hugging pacifist could be hypnotized by this book.

In full disclosure, I have to say that I only bought this book because I know the author. It is not the usual subject matter that I would choose to read, much less to buy. In fact, as well-written as it is, I still had a hard time with the beginning because of all the violence. But once I got past that, I found it truly mesmerizing and could not put it down. Its premise, graphic scenes, and haunting characters stayed with me long past the reading. It was an eye-opening tale. I hope that it is not an accurate picture of what our military endures, but I now fear that it is.

Awesome Book - Cover to Cover!

This novel takes place during the Second Battle of Falujah. As a retired Marine who spent time in Iraq, I was amazed at the author's impeccable attention to detail and historical accuracy. Everything in this book is realistic. The story is intriguing and the plot twists believable. If you don't usually read military fiction, you will nevertheless enjoy this book. If you are a military fiction reader, this is one of the best.

after the english monster this ranks as my second fave. I was hooked at the way that the author made me feel as if the people in the book believed they were modern and up to date, which was powerful as it was meant to be about people 200 years ago.very real believable characters, just brilliant

Meisterhaft erzählt

Ich bin leider sehr misstrauisch geworden, was deutsche Kindle Bücher angeht. Vor allem Krimis. Doch dieser ist eine Ausnahme. Er hat mich zurückgeführt nach Deutschland, hat mir Berlin gezeigt, wie ich es nicht gesehen habe, hat mir Einblick geschaffen in die Welt der sozialen Spannungen dieser Weltstadt. Danke für die Stunden der Faszination und Spannung.

A Great Fast-Paced Thriller

I am an avid reader and average about fifteen books a month. Yet no matter how many great books I'll stumble upon in the next three months, Local Hero will surely remain one of the top ten books I've read this year. It has it all: extremely fast-paced plot, amazing writing, and well-developed characters that stay with you long after you read the last page. I finished the book a couple of days ago, and I still keep thinking about it.

John Doe, the main character, although flawed and deadly, is a tall, dark, and handsome type of guy who, at the same time, is kind, generous, and loyal to those he cares about. His 'rebirth' and inner struggles are quite thrilling, his reflexes are phenomenal, and his muscles are mouthwatering. I would go out to dinner with him any day.

The villain isn't portrayed as pure evil but as a man who yearns for power; he is mad but human. I don't feel sorry for him, yet I can understand why he did what he did.

The supportive characters are all three-dimensional and believable. My favorite one is Mrs. Grange, the B&B owner; she is absolutely wonderful. I would love to have her and Sheriff Scott Lee as my friends and next-door neighbors. Both their stories are remarkable. I grew up and live in big cities, and those small-town close-knit communities where everybody knows everybody else and their business always fascinate me. That, along with the vivid descriptions of the island, made me wonder why I'd never been to Maine and want to book a trip there ASAP.

On Amazon, the book was listed in the romance category. I wouldn't call it a romance, not even a romantic suspense. If I were to categorize it, I would say it was a thriller/criminal drama, and for some reason it reminded me of Mario Puzo's The Godfather, one of my all-time favorite books. Do you remember Michael Corleone, and how his criminal activities were lightly interwoven with his romantic relationships? In Local Hero, John's struggles and love life were closely blended as well, but he, however, had only one love interest. There were no sex scenes in the book, yet when the hero and heroine were together (not very often), the chemistry between them was undeniable.

Look inside the book. Read the first chapter. You'll know what you'll get because the pace and writing style are consistent throughout the whole book.

Wonderful Book

I absolutely loved this book. The only reason I am only giving it a 4 instead of 5 is because of format issues in the paperback, sentences were cut off and moved to the next line ect. As for the story line I give it a 5 :-) Every time I thought I had it figured out a new twist would come about, it kept me guessing right to the end. I could not put this book down (other than to go to work), I finished it within 24 hours of starting it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery!

Nothing is As It Seems

`Not Forgotten' by Donna Zadunajsky is an enthralling story that keeps the reader guessing on every front. From the very first line of the opening it is clear that the main protagonist, Deanna Iris, has a mysterious past and while hints are provided consistently, the reader does not quite learn what this woman's mysterious background is. Because of this the reader is hooked early but when one set of questions is answered, even more mysteries ensue. So much of what appears to be real is, in fact, not real at all. It begins to look as if Deanna's life is as fragile as a house of cards just waiting to be scattered. Yet while for a time what is happening might seem to be smoke and mirrors, the explanations that come towards the end are satisfactory and convincing.

Perhaps answers might have arrived earlier were it not for the reluctance of some of the other characters - Deanna's mother, Hank the caretaker of the cemetery, and even the friendly policeman, Officer Bates - to answer Deanna's questions. There might be irritation in this for some readers who might be prompted to think, `For goodness, sake, why don't you just come out with it!!' but given the delicate nature of the truth, it can easily be understood that these people had only Deanna's interests at heart and they were trying to protect her from a truth that could be full of hurt.

I have one little niggle. When Deanna goes through a series of events and is reporting what happened to another character, the author allows her to go over the whole thing again in dialogue. This, of course, is what would happen in real life but in a novel it is unnecessary as far as the reader is concerned. It is time wasting and slows down the action.

Loved every second, working my way through all of Bill Eidson's novels and haven't been disappointed yet. The Guardian had a dark, dynamic plotline with many unexpected discoveries along the way. Eidson perfectly captured the feel of the Greater Boston area and used the juxtaposition of the luxe and the gritty sides of Boston to his advantage.

Interesting but wasted concept.

When Reverend Everett passed away his son Liam was left with two things, his fathers Bible collection and the strong suspicion the tumble down the flight of stairs that the police ruled accidental was anything but. With no clear motive Liam's suspicions seem pretty far fetched - that is until he finds prized first editions of some of the most beloved literature in history. Why did his father own these and who could he have got them from?

This started out pretty interesting but doesn't end up going very far. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen but always felt let down. Interesting but wasted concept. 2.5/5

One incredibly well written and thought out tale!

Your minister dad has died suddenly â fell down the stairs of all things after preaching a sermon â and you inheritâ.a bunch of old Bibles â you figure that was a loss, until one day you take one down and open it and discoverâ.

â.that itâs been hollowed out inside â and so have the rest â and in each of them is a rare â I mean â almost one-of-a-kind-rare book â except for one that has a bunch of cashâ.

What do you do when youâre at home pretending to be sick so you can use the internet to find out just how much each is worth and a guy stops by and it turns out that he is the guy who has been âfindingâ these rare books and your dad is the middleman who sells them to crazed collectors, taking a percentage and passing the rest to this visitorâ

Then you figure, well why not? Iâll take over for my dadâ

Untilâbut you will have to dive into this incredibly well written and thought out tale to find out!
