Great Short Story
What happens when you are waiting for a heart transplant? This story is a short story, but I felt really detailed and intense. Helen had been waiting for months for the beeper to go off telling her that a heart has been found. During this time she was trying to live her life but was scared. Then the beeper went off and they had a heart for her. Yeah so awesome, you would think, but then she decided she wanted to meet the Mother of the person she received the transplant.
You would think that it would be simple just meet the mother and thank her for the heart, but you would never think of what happens next. You will have to read the book.
I felt the author did a great job of writing this short story, there could have been more, but there wasnât any reason. The book tells it like it and I thought it was great.
This is the 2nd book I have read from Donna Brown and canât wait to read more. Makes me really like short stories.
A matter of the heart
Artist and housewife Helen, is a recipient of a heart transplant. Despite the doctor's warning, Helen reaches out and encourages a friendship with the donor's mother, Marian. At first Marian comes off as sweet and a bit distraught -- but soon becomes unbearably imposing, as well as rude and demeaning to Helen. Marian's behavior escalates, boarding on insane and creepy.
The writing was very smooth and the flow made the book a quick read, but I was disappointed by the end. The final scene is a major one, but it petered off, leaving me wanting for more.
*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A solid thriller
I have just started reading thriller/women's fiction stories, and I must say I really like them. I just finished The Girl on the Train, and now this one. Donna Brown's Losing Heart is a fast-paced, Fatal Attraction-feeling thriller, which blends guilt, loss, compassion, and outright psychosis into one solid story. I definitely rooted for Helen as she confronted Marian and also feared for her safety. In fact, there's so much in this novella, I almost wish it were a book instead, so Ms. Brown could have spent more time expanding on the end a bit.
Great ideas that need more work
I'll start by saying that this is a terrific plot, a great idea. Helen has a heart transplant but gets more than she bargains for when the mother of the donor invades her life. Marion Chambers does so in such a way that at first the reader feels sorry for her, then thinks she's a bit full-on, then realises that there's a lot more to her than meets the eye. That was good - I didn't expect it. Losing Heart would make a great thriller film (something like The Hand That Rocks The Cradle) - or a novel. The problem with the book I've just read is that it's crammed into novelette length.
We find out at the beginning of the story that Helen is having an affair with her doctor, Jack.
