State Representative Emily Chenevert Had The Biggest Home Run of the Legislative Session

Listen Later

State Representative Emily Chenevert had a notably active and impactful legislative session, with her most prominent achievement being the passage of a bill reforming Louisiana’s comparative fault system. Previously, the state allowed individuals who were up to 99% at fault in an accident to still sue for damages. Chenevert’s bill changes that threshold to 51%, aligning Louisiana with 34 other states and aiming to reduce what she describes as a “culture of lawsuits.”

This reform is expected to help lower insurance rates, particularly for commercial drivers, though Chenevert acknowledges it will take time to see measurable effects.Chenevert emphasized the collaborative nature of the legislative process, crediting her colleagues and committees for their support. She also highlighted the importance of listening to constituents and businesses, many of whom have faced skyrocketing insurance premiums. The bill is part of a broader effort to improve Louisiana’s legal climate and make the state more attractive to businesses.

In addition to the comparative fault bill, Chenevert supported other legislation aimed at increasing transparency in medical billing and addressing broader insurance and litigation issues. She sees these efforts as incremental but necessary steps—“bites out of the elephant”—toward systemic reform.Looking ahead, Chenevert plans to continue focusing on legal and business reforms, particularly those that support workforce development and economic growth. She encourages constituents to stay engaged and communicate their priorities, noting that legislative success often depends on public input and sustained effort. As she prepares for the next regular session, Chenevert remains committed to tackling complex issues with a practical, common-sense approach.
