  • Good news from Taiwan backs chip rally as focus shifts to US CPI | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The S&P500 and Nasdaq renewed record as bonds remained bid and US dollar soft after Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Powell’s semiannual testimony and ahead of today’s US CPI update.
Technology stocks led gains on encouraging news from Taiwan, Apple rallied nearly 1.9% on optimistic iPhone sales forecast, US crude jumped after tipping a toe below the $81pb yesterday as the latest EIA data showed a 3.4-mio barrel fall in US oil inventories last week and as OPEC revised its global economic growth forecast slightly higher to 2.9%.
A set of data above expectations could slow down the doves and call for a correction in both equity and bond markets into the weekend. Figures in line, or ideally softer-than-expected - if also combined with soft weekly jobless claims - should keep the Fed doves in charge of the market, further boost appetite for bonds and pressure yields and the US dollar to the downside and give a further support to the equity rally.

  • Inflation is no longer the only risk to the economy, says Powell | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell’s testimony yesterday wasn’t overly optimistic but it revived the expectation that a rate cut could come sooner rather than later.
In the first day of his semiannual testimony before Senators, Powell said – for the first time in three years – that inflation is no longer the only threat to the US economy but the cooling jobs market also is. Although he didn’t want to offer a clear timeline when asked when the Fed would lower interest rates, Powell said that the latest jobs report sent a ‘pretty clear signal’ of a cooler labor market.
US yields fell, major indices advanced to fresh records but the US dollar remained bid on a euro selloff after Moody’s warned France about risks to its credit rating should government finances get worse.
Elsewhere, US crude cleared a minor Fibonacci support yesterday and nat gas remains under pressure near oversold market conditions. Inflation in China came in below expectations, while the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) maintained its policy rate unchanged at 5.5% for the 8th straight meeting but hinted that the degree of restraint will be gradually adjusted to the expected decline in inflationary pressures.

  • All eyes on Powell’s semiannual testimony | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Most European indices including the British big caps closed Monday’s session in the negative. The French CAC 40 underperformed its peers but the French yields ease, the yield spread with Germany narrowed and the euro was bid. We could see the EURUSD gain further positive momentum this week, especially if Federal Reserve (Fed) President Jerome Powell delivers a dovish speech before the congress between today and tomorrow, and the latest CPI update from the US comes in sufficiently soft.
The S&P500 and Nasdaq 100 hit fresh records yesterday and their journey is increasingly diverging from the economic data. The forecast for 12-month forward earnings for the S&P500 stands at an all-time high according to Bloomberg, the S&P500 companies are expected to deliver more than 9% EPS growth in Q2 and this number is expected to rise to double-digit territory later this year. Even the non-tech sectors are seen posting a positive growth. But Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow index predicts that the US economy may have grown just 1.5% in Q2, down from above 3% at the last quarter of last year and 5% the quarter before that. Something must give.

  • France’s surprise shift from far-right to far-left | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The UK’s Labour Party is set to win a highly anticipated landslide victory in the general election. Cable is upbeat near 1.2770 and the FTSE futures are pointing at a positive start to the session.
In France, the situation looks better from a market perspective, as well. The latest polls suggest that Marine Le Pen’s National Rally could fall ‘well short’ of a majority at this weekend’s second and final tour of legislative elections. Investors are now in a hurry to return to French assets and the euro at discounted prices not to miss the post-election rally next Monday, the EURUSD extends gains past 1.0820 this morning, and given the FOMO a post-election rally in the euro, we might see further gains before the weekly closing bell.
Across the Atlantic, the US will reveal its latest jobs figures today and the Federal Reserve (Fed) doves are waiting in ambush to boost their rate cut bets. The US economy is expected to have added around 190K new nonfarm jobs in June down from 272K printed a month earlier and the wages growth is seen weaker. A weaker-than-expected set of data should further fuel the Fed rate cut bets, weigh on the yields and the US dollar, while a positive surprise should get the Fed doves to scale back their rate cut bets – that have been rising lately thanks to a set of soft economic data and dovish Fed comments - and throw a floor under the yields and back the dollar.

  • Euro extends recovery on fear of missing out a post-French election rally | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote

  • Time to say Goodbye! | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Yesterday soft data from the US fueled the Fed doves yesterday. The latest ADP report showed that the US economy added 150’000 new private jobs in June, less than expected by analysts and slightly less than last month, initial jobless claims rose, the factory orders unexpectedly fell in May and the ISM services unexpectedly contracted in June, the employment component plunged while prices fell more than expected. As such, investors saw in the data the evidence that the Fed is looking for to cut its rates. US yields and the USD fell and major US indices refreshed record before July 4th holiday.
Today, Brits are heading to the polls today aiming to oust the Conservatives from power after 14-years. A Labour win is seen as a net positive for both the British stock markets and sterling.
On the continent, the broad based dollar weakness sent the EURUSD past the 1.0750 resistance yesterday, the pair tested shortly traded past the 1.08 level, but the French political risks prevail and visibility is low into the second election weekend in France where we just don’t know whether Le Pen will or will not win a parliamentary majority.
Elsewhere, Japanese Nikkei is up for the third consecutive session and is approaching an ATH level reached back in March. The USDJPY doesn’t dare to move above the 162 for now. A broad based dollar weakness helps keeping the pressure contained.

  • Powell sends US equities to fresh highs, Tesla jumps | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Federal Reserve (Fed) President Jerome Powell said that the Fed has made ‘quite a bit of progress’ on inflation and investors didn’t need more to jump back on the back of a bull. The S&P500 closed at a record high again, while Nasdaq 100 hit the 20’000 mark for the first time in history.
Tesla shares jumped 10% yesterday after the company reported a smaller decline in quarterly sales than expected.
On the data front, US job openings rose along with economic optimism but job openings in the private sector for example rose only 42K after falling nearly 500K in March and nearly 400K in April, so the aggregate 3-month average still showed a steep decline in job openings. Due today, the ADP report is expected to print 163K new private job additions in June.
Elsewhere, headline inflation eased to 2.5% in June but core inflation remained steady at 2.9%, disappointing those who were expecting a decline to 2.8%, while British shops printed zero inflation last month fueling rate cut bets in Britain after the election is over.
In energy, the barrel of US crude advanced to almost $85pb yesterday while nat gas futures extended losses.

  • US crude rallies on July 4th demand & Hurricane Beryl | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
The week started on a positive note but the positive vibes will likely leave their place to the chatter of scenarios regarding how the French will prevent Marine Le Pen from gaining a majority in the parliament in the second round of the legislative election this weekend. The euro and European equities are lower on Tuesday morning after early week rally. Eyes on Eurozone inflation data.
In the US, soft data didn’t prevent US bonds from falling as Trump win expectations lead to a steepening of the curve.
In the UK, Cable remains under pressure ahead of Thursday’s general election while the FTSE 100 can’t fully benefit from a softer sterling and a rapid rise in oil prices.
US crude rallies ahead of the July 4th holiday in the US and Hurricane Beryl.
