Here's a beat-heavy break between main Stay Cool shows extra rare with me riding solo for an hour. I planned to extend this to two hours but I've come up with a better idea involving a series of instrumental-focused mixes since there are so many that I don't get to fit in the show.
Look out for 0.5 mixes between shows once a month for the time being and as always thank you for the support.

@dnnywtts first caught my attention when he released Messenger Series Vol. 1 with @cosmiccompositions a thought-provoking 2013 EP that featured production from Ohbliv, KVZE and more. Four years later he's returned with his brand new debut album, Black Boy Meets World, entirely produced by Jonwayne of Stones Throw. I caught up with Danny to talk about the album, working with Jonwayne, leaving his job and taking music full time, and more.

Well it finally happened. Since I began doing interviews all the way back in 2013 starting with Sango Soulection has been the most requested interviewee, and back in March of this year it happened when they were here for a gig at Camden’s established Roundhouse location. The following day I caught them at Spiritland, a new music-focused restaurant that served as the space for a vibes session with a number of Soulection’s talented roster curating.
Having been a fan since 2012 when I first discovered Sango, Evil Needle and Ta-ku there were lots of questions I could’ve asked but I whittled them down to ones I felt were most important. Enjoy.
Part 1: The Whooligan and Andre Power
0:10 How it feels to have seen Soulection reach six years
1:30 Who are some of the lesser known that have helped Soulection get to where it is?
3:50 Soulection’s special relationship with London
6:04 Where else in the world they have a strong connection to, whether as part of Soulection or outside of it
9:12 Where in the world they want to go to that they haven’t been to yet
11:07 Soulection's success as a template for numerous others looking to start a label and whether they feel there's a big difference in people being inspired VS copycatting
13:34 Why Soulection took a break from releasing projects last year
14:20 Soulection removing the roster from it’s website and the movement’s recent transition
16:30 How Promise Once More, Soulection’s most recent compilation came together in terms of concept and content
20:27 The biggest misconception that people have about Soulection or themselves?
25:23 Plans for the next twelve months (Soulection Health?!)
    27:45 Part 2: Joe Kay
28:11 Reaching 300 episodes of Soulection radio and they biggest challenges in keeping up with a weekly show
30:25 How it felt playing a three-hour special with many of his loved ones in front of him
31:30 Soulection’s special relationship with London
31:13 Where else in the world he feels a strong connection to
33:31 Soulection’s origin as Illvibes and how what his Grandma thought of it at the time (as he started it in her garage)
34:35 How he got all the producers that contributed to the first Soulection compilation, which dropped on the same day as show 001
35:42 His Slowed Edits taking off and how he feels about the success they’ve seen
36:51 Why Soulection took a break from releasing projects last year
37:58 Soulection removing the roster from it’s website and the movement’s recent transition
39:30 How Soulection discovered DKVPZ and why they felt their music was worthy for a white label release
40:37 The release of “To Me” and how they discovered BOWTYE and Avalon Young
    41:56 Promise Once More
42:53 The biggest misconception that people have about Soulection or himself?
43:45 Soulection Festival and why now is the right time for it

  • Stay Cool: The Ivan Ave Interview
▶ Snippet premiered on Stay Cool w/ seangran 001 feat. Ivan Ave & Evil Needle: bit.ly/staycoolradio001
▶ Get early updates on the show: twitter.com/staycoolfam
I’m honoured to have had @IvanAve as my very first interview subject for Stay Cool all the way back in March. The musician and DJ has been a mainstay in my playlists at home since I first heard “Obedience” with Mndsgn off of @Jakarta-Records' Spring In Jakarta release. There’s something about his unassumingly deep lyrics and demeanour that, coupled with beats by Ringgo and his numerous fellow @Mutual-Intentions collaborators, has always appealed to me in a way few rappers do. Above a very groovy (and noisy) Camden Academy DJ set we sat for a chat and discussed a number of things; here’s a handy list so you can keep track.
    We talked about:
(0:00) Shows in London, how he got into hip hop & DJing and his stage presence
    (4:39) His musical upbringing
(6:25) How his Oslo based crew Mutual Intentions came together
(10:13) The homegrown hip hop scene in Norway and how international music is received there
(11:52) Whether growing up in Norway had a large effect on what he does now
(13:19) The story behind “Also” with Kaytranada and Kiefer
(15:39) Letting things happen naturally, the message behind his music and his music as a sanctuary beyond the BS
(18:31) The stunning “Also” video and how Also Known As, the Oslo-based producers that produced the video, are deeply tied to the concept of the song
(20:32) His connection to London and artists / platforms from the area that he’s a fan of (s/o to Wu-Lu, Hawk House and others)
(22:27) His favourite vinyl that he’s discovered in the last year (Candle Tribe - Boogie / R&B from the late 80's)
(23:31) Producing beats himself, old aliases and the status of Every Eye
(24:58) The Hands project from his early days and the importance of the strength physical realm in his lyrics
(27:37) How his writing process has changed over his career. Stopping rapping after 30?!
(28:50) Nas being the greatest of all time, his beat selection and Life Is Good
(31:19) Recent (and old) albums he’s been listening to lately
    (33:11) Show equipment and his 1997 SP-555
(34:35) The unique position of being a White, Northern European rapper and the importance of awareness of the place of such a person in the music game
(38:02) Artists to look out for (Jawn Rice, Joyce Wrice and Jon Bap)
    (40:17) His plans for 2017
(40:55) His relationship with Jakarta Records and why it’s such a great home for his music
