One week after each Meet the Movement entry I’ll be uploading a mix featuring strictly artists and affiliates from the movement I interviewed. These mixes are intended for use as the background music for each interview, but also as a celebration of the movement.
Italdred is the focus this time around, and this mix contains strictly tracks and artists from the five compilations that they’ve released since the label began in January 2014. Given their origins hip-hop makes for the bulk of the mix, but it speeds up towards the end, varying into the ambient, grime and footwork sounds that Italdred have embraced as of late.

  • Meet The Movement #002 Rob Huckle & Duncan Brazzil of Italdred [Interview]

Meet the Movement is an interview and mix series that highlights the stories of the people behind the labels that we’ve come to love in recent years, as well as the sounds that define them.
The second installment of the series looks at Italdred, a London-based label that started with a bang after releasing its debut release The Beginning, a 68-track compilation in January of last year. Although primarily known for it’s hip-hop orientated sounds, the label recently dropped their fifth compilation, The (Nu) Beginning, which marks an expansion into footwork, garage, grime and other sounds.
Prior to the release of The (Nu) Beginning, I spoke to Rob Huckle, Italdred’s founder, and Duncan Brazzil, the label’s A&R about how Italdred started, Rob’s other labels and the change that their most recent compilation represents to them.
Check back next week for the mix I made to play in the background of this interview, featuring exclusively Italdred artists and affiliates.

One week after each Meet the Movement entry I’ll be uploading a mix featuring strictly artists and affiliates from the movement I interviewed. These mixes are used as the background music for each interview, but I figure it’s well worth releasing them separately as well, as a celebration of the movement.
First up is of course Darker Than Wax. My focus for this mix was not only to feature a bunch of songs I like, but also to show DTW’s expansive sound, so the mix starts with chill and boom-bap Hip-Hop vibes but soon departs on a journey, before closing with Garage, House and experimental sounds.
PS: Thank you so much for the support so far, I'm still in awe that so many people appreciate the vision of what I'm doing, it means a lot.

As SoundCloud, Spotify and other online-based music platforms pave the way for how we consume audio in the digital age, artists are finding themselves with more power and control than ever before. New collectives and record labels are being created at a record rate, and yet despite that many of the people behind them go unknown, with the artists that represent them being a listener’s biggest connection.
With this in mind I’m starting a new series called Meet the Movement, in which I speak to creatives from various record labels, collectives and so on. The aim is both to educate about the history behind some of the movements we’ve come to love in recent years and also to inspire people to do it themselves, as most of these movements started from just an idea, with a lot support and love driving them to where they are today.
Starting off the series is Dean Chew, also known as the Funk Bast*rd, co-founder of Singaporean-based Darker Than Wax, one of the most diverse labels to be birthed in recent history. Often mistaken as being a “beat label”, its origins are actually in more uptempo sounds, and releases have crossed a number of genres, including footwork, jazz, house, hip-hop, bass, boogie, trap, garage, ambient, R&B and future.
Ahead of his upcoming Brazil and New York tour with Go Yama and NeguimBeats, I spoke to the musician about his origins, DTWs beginnings and its roster.
Check back next week for the mix I made to play in the background of this interview, featuring exclusively Darker Than Wax artists and affiliates.

  • A Conversation with Sango [Interview]
    ▶ discover: @sangobeats
    ▶ Read the write-up via @artistic-manifesto: http://bit.ly/SangoInterview
As a bit of a thank you gift I’m releasing the audio from my first ever artist interview, with Sango of Soulection, recorded on July 31st, 2013. It’s crazy to listen to it and see how far my interviews have come since then, especially since making the leap to publishing the audio starting with my starRo interview back in February.
Sango is a big inspiration for me, not just sonically, but also in terms of his mindset, faith and attitude towards the relationships in his life. Having discovered his music about a year earlier, his sound really opened up my mind to Soulection and the genre that would be loosely-defined as “future music”. After a mutual friend found out that I was a fan, I was given the opportunity to profile him just after his new album North. Given that the album was the main focus of the interview, what better soundtrack to use for the background than the album itself!
In the interview we discussed the album, his faith, AGO, collaborations and a lot more. Hopefully you’ll find it as inspirational as I do.
PS: Excuse the audio, back then I didn’t know how to record Skype calls so this is a recording of myself and Sango via my speakers.
Big thanks to Tiffany, Jacq, Soulection and of course Kai for the opportunity. Also to Michell for giving the write-up a home.
