READING: MARK 12:18-34
Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?’
Jesus replied, ‘Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Now about the dead rising – have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!’
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’
‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’
‘Well said, teacher,’ the man replied. ‘You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.’
When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’ And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
REFLECTION
Ok, ok… on Monday I said that at the heart of what God wants from us is for us to trust him.
Well, as this passage proves that’s not entirely true. God wants us to love him and love
others. In my defence, trust is a huge part of what it means to love someone. True, we are
told to love our enemies so that we might break through a cycle of mutual fear and
mistrust… but if we are consistent in our love, they might just learn that we are not a threat
and begin to trust us. Anyway. This is an aside.
If love is what God is after and trust is part of love… what other qualities, what other
elements or facets are there to this love that Jesus is talking about? After all, it is more
important that our religious offerings and things that we do ‘for’ God. The bible gives us a
few clues…
Think about someone you love… maybe your spouse, perhaps a child, maybe it’s a parent
or a trusted friend.
Towards that person I am patient, I am kind. I am not envious of their good fortune, to them I
do not need to boast, with them I am not proud. I would never dishonor them, I am not after
what I can get from our relationship, Towards that person I am not easily angered. I do not
keeps score, they owe me nothing. I will go out of my way to protect them, I trust them
implicitly, I always want the very best for them and I will never give up on them.
This of course is 1 Corinthians 13, made personal to our own relationships… It’s powerful
stuff isn’t it. It’s not just about the here and now either. As I read and reread these words I
am struck by how much of it looks to the future. It’s almost a vow or promise.
So what qualities are there to the love that God is after?
Patience… Friends don’t always get it right first time. There is a grace extended to them. I
know they will come good in the end.
Kindness… generous, considerate, warm, caring,
It does not boast , it is not proud… there is a sense that with them you have nothing to
prove. You can be yourself. You don’t need to wear a mask, you don’t need to pretend to be
someone that you are not.
Love does not dishonour… it brings honour, respect, esteem, it thinks well of, valued. You
are of utmost importance to me.
Not self-seeking - In fact it is self giving. Not what can I get but what can I give. Not how is
this person useful to me but what can I do for them? What would help them, what would
enable them.
Not easily angered - no, love is patient and kind. Gracious, forgiving. Perfect love, we read
in 1 john, casts out fear. There is no fear of punishment… just help!
I keep no record of wrong - or right! I don’t keep a list in my head, I did this for them… it’s
their turn. I am going to stop being nice until they are nice to me… there is no debt between
us no matter who gives… who receives… who messes up… who is hurt!
Always protects - uh huh!
Always trusts - Uh huh
Always Hopes - love always sees the potential, it pulls out the best from us. Knows that
there is more… Love gives courage… enables us to step out… it helps us grow.
Always Perseveres - I ain’t never giving up on you…Never, ever, no-way, no matter what. I
ain’t never giving up on you!
God doesn’t demand this kind of love from us… He loves us this way. God isn’t some big
bad boss who shouts LOVE ME! We are not waiting outside the headmaster's office waiting
to be called in and reprimanded for not being loving enough! NO! God loves us, he loves you
and me. With the qualities that I have outlined today.
This is a love that is unconditional love… This is a love that is self sacrificing (think Jesus!!).
This is a love that is powerful and transforming.
Being loved by God is HUGE… It is foundational to who we are… and it will spill out to those
around us. Love God…. BE LOVED BY God… don’t hold back, he’s ready and waiting. And
his love will change you. Practice loving others… being a friend… a true friend. Practice
loving your spouse… love those who you struggle with… those who don’t deserve it. After all,
that is exactly what God has done for us in Jesus.
Let me pray for us using Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians:
PRAYER
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in
your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that
you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s
holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to
know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the
fullness of God. Amen
