Dr. Ferdinando Almeida is a recent graduate from the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Lab at the University of Illinois. In this podcast, he presents the results of three experiments conducted to determine the effects of heat damage on concentrations of nutrients and amino acid digestibility in canola, sunflower, and cottonseed meals. In this interview recorded at the 2013 Illinois Pork Expo, Todd Gleason talks with Dr. Hans H. Stein about alternative feed ingredients in swine diets, improving feed conversion rates, and guidelines for using corn containing mycotoxins.

Dr. Hans H. Stein discusses various aspects of feeding animal proteins to pigs. Dr. Stein explains the importance of ash in assessing the nutritional value of feed ingredients, and describes a recent decline in the nutritional value of fish meal. Finally, he discusses the use of several alternative animal protein sources for use in swine diets: byproducts from the poultry industry, intestinal byproducts, and blood products.

Neil Jaworksi, Master's student in the Stein Monogastric Nutrition Laboratory, presents some of his thesis research on carbohydrate composition of grains and grain coproducts, and how carbohydrate composition affects the energy value of these ingredients.
