STEMpunk quiz in action:On Tuesday August 15 2017, The STEMpunks, Tom, Christie and Shane hosted our third STEMpunk quiz as a part of the Sydney Science Festival and supported by National Science Week at Wayward Brewery in Annandale, Sydney. It was a huge success with a huge audience, and a great vibe.  This time we invited Gid M-K and Bish Marzook who were great! Massive thanks to all involved, especially Linda and the team at Wayward Brewing Co. and the Sydney Science Festival for such an awesome venue and event. We had an incredible turnout of 85 people including some school students and a lot of awesome people and prizes (in fact tone of the reasons for the poor sound quality at times was due to the large crowd. This is a great problem to have. We had a lot of fun and we hope those who were there did also. In this episode, for something different, we've included the pre-quiz interview with Gid and Bish and we pick up the action from the quiz about halfway through Round E. This week our interview is with our first ever repeat guest, James O'Hanlon. James is a Insect Ecologist at the University of New England. In another STEMpunk First, this episode has had no edits at all! This is our conversation as we had it in Jame's house in Armidale. It was great fun. We talked about his research, what it's like to be a scientist in the real world, and we revisited James answer to What is STEM? After this chat, we switched mics and James interviewed me (I believe I am his first repeat guest too!) And you can hear what we chatted about on James Podcast In Situ Science You can Follow James on Twitter @jamohanlon

Rod Lamberts and Will grant from the Centre for Public Awareness of Science (CPAS) at ANU.  Here looking very wholesome.WholesomeSTEM is our chat with Wholesome Science communicators Will Grant and Rod Lamberts from the ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, CPAS. We talk about Science Communication, facts, jobs and opinions. We even got into some politics and comedy (sometimes those are difficult to distinguish). We've wanted to chat with Rod and Will for a while now and are very glad and happy that we got the chance. It was a lot of fun! Here's a quote from the show that has stayed with me: "The easiest people to persuade are the people who wanna be persuaded...often what we do is not injecting facts, but context" Rod and Will run their own podcast called the wholesome show, a pub event where they interview scientists and other thinkers and ask them tough questions, over a beer. Check it out. You may or may not regret it!! They answered Noel Hanna's question STEM workers of the future and asked their own: "How do you balance your work and life...ya drongo?" http://wholesomeshow.com/ http://cpas.anu.edu.au/

What does the weather; the French; and the human voice; have in common? In this episode, Shane chats with Dr Noel Hanna.  Noel Hanna has experience in teaching, science communication and research.  He is currently a research associate working in Joe Wolfe’s Acoustic group.  Noel has so far had an interesting and varied career, going from being a linguistic student, a meteorologist, school teacher and now a researcher into the physics of the human voice. Noel answered Dr Sean Farrell's question about combating the rise in trend of distrust in experts?  Noel then asks our next guest this: There are some predictions that STEM workers, particularly programmers, will be the blue-collar workers of the future.  Is this something to look forward to and why?
