Welcome to the first ever Step & Repeat Roundtable, an exclusive episode featuring special guests Carly, Corinne, and Jenny all joining hosts Andrew and Matt. This week’s discussion: movies directed by women.
The Academy once again nominated five guys in the Best Director lineup this year. And it’s no surprise; in the Oscars’ 92-year history, only five women have been nominated in the category.
That’s not to say there weren’t excellent women-directed movies worthy of a nomination! Little Women, The Farewell, Hustlers, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Portrait of a Lady on Fire. And the list goes on.
On top of that, some Oscar voters are flat out not even giving them a chance! They literally cannot get men to even see Little Women.
So what gives? Why do we so frequently ignore movies directed by women? Even this very podcast is biased towards men-directed films, despite its best intentions.
More importantly, what can we do to fix it? Or at least make it better than what it is now? Carly, Corinne, Jenny, Andrew, and Matt discuss ways we can give a voice to the more diverse and recognize those films that are long overdue for acknowledgement!
