  • Episode 55 – Trammell S. Crow, Founder, EarthX
Trammell Crow is a Dallas, TX based businessman, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and innovative leader in business development and operations. He is the founder of EarthX, the “world’s largest” environmental expo, conference, and film festival celebrating Earth Day every April in Dallas. In 2019, EarthX saw over 177,000 attendees, 650 exhibitors, 6,500 youth, and 452 speakers. In 2020, which is the 10th anniversary of EarthX as well as the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the attendance is expected to exceed 200,000. (Learn more and register your organization at earthx.org)
In this episode, Trammell converses with Aaron Perry and
Joanie Klar (Global Advisory Board member for the Y on Earth Community) about
his Texas-style “Conservative Conservation,” which he considers an important
niche in society. The conversation also includes what can be done in the built
environment to enhance carbon sequestration, sustainability, and quality of
life. Trammell, who exhorts that “action is key” emphasizes that
awareness-raising IS action, and a critical step for the transformation of our
culture and our society’s practices. His EarthX event, which is a collection of
9 conferences at once, has several focal points: Global Youth Summit, Ocean,
and Investment Forum, to name a few.
Trammell recalls where he was on the first Earth Day in 1970, and, a long-time wildlife and habitat conservationist, implores the audience to support the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project, which is restoring native wolves to Colorado – essential for the ecological sustainability of the region. December 4th is a deadline to achieve 126,000 signatures on the Colorado ballot initiative for the wolves – you can support the effort by donating at rockymountainwolfproject.org.

  • Episode 54 – Katie Garces, Director, Beautycounter
Katie Garces, NP, shows and shares the wonderful personal care and beauty products from Beautycounter. Did you know that the cosmetics industry, reaping $62 Billion per year in revenues, is only regulated in the United States by a 2-page document that was enacted in the 1930s? Our skin is our largest organ, and, the sad truth is that many of the make-up, soap, and sun-screen products on the market today are dangerous – dangerous to our own health as well as the health of the environment. There are over 1,400 substances that the European Union has banned, that Beautycounter excludes over 1,500 (the “Never List”) from all of its products (working in close partnership with the Environmental Working Group (EWG).
Why play Russian Roulette with your health and well-being? You can avoid cancer-causing, neuro-toxic, endocrine-disrupting, and reproductive-damaging chemicals by making the switch to Beautycounter, a B-Corporation dedicated to People, Planet, and Profit. With a focus on Supplying, Educating, and Advocating for a systemic transformation of the health and beauty industry, Beautycounter is leading the way to health, well-being, stewardship, and sustainability. Now, too, they are transitioning all of their plastic packaging to glass – another tremendous step forward for a better future!
You can join the Beautycounter family by ordering through a special Y on Earth affiliate link (beautycounter.com/yonearth) – a great way to detoxify your life AND support the Y on Earth Community’s Stewardship & Sustainability Podcast series AND Community Mobilization events!
If you order in the month of November (perfect for Holiday gift giving!), you will be entered to win a Beautycounter Sunblock (reef-safe!) or Charcoal Cleansing Bar. And, if you’re interested in becoming a BC affiliate, reach out to Katie at: [email protected]. This is what a win/win/win and regenerative, stewardship-centric, community-based economy looks like!
Katie Garces received her BS in Nursing from Creighton
University before earning an MS at the University of Pennsylvania and becoming
an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She is also a Certified Nutritional
Practitioner with a focus on Holistic Nutrition, serves as a coach and mentor empowering
women from diverse demographics to cultivate health, well-being and improved
qualities of life, and is the founder of the wildly popular Denver-based “Beyond
    Book Club.”

  • Episode 53 – DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller), Google Artist in Residence and CSO of Global Brain
DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller) is Chief of Strategy for Global Brain, and is a composer, multimedia artist, editor and author. Paul is the first Artist in Residence at Google and the first Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His DJ MIXER iPad app has seen more than 12 million downloads in the last year. He has produced and composed work for Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, and score of artists and award-winning films. Miller’s work as a media artist has appeared in the Whitney Biennial; The Venice Biennial for Architecture; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany; Kunsthalle, Vienna, Austria; The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and many other museums and galleries. His book, Sound Unbound (MIT Press) is a best-selling anthology of writings on electronic music and digital media.
    In
this discussion, Paul shares his views on rethinking capitalism,
Earth as spaceship, our sense of Locality, the creation of a “Massive
Social Sculpture,” the myth of rationality, the myths of
advertising, the crisis of democracy, nature deficit disorder, sleep
deficit disorder, and the immense imperative to work toward mental
health, ethical culture, social justice, climate justice, and a
saner, biomimetic future. He calls us to “pull carbon out of the
air,” to “plant trees,” and to “cultivate algae” to help
heal our planet. Recognizing the fundamental necessity of an informed
populace for a well-functioning democracy, DJ Spooky suggests that
“sunlight” (ie: transparent information) is the antidote to
    political pathology.
DJ Spooky also discusses his personal well-being practices, which include lots of walking and drinking tea and fresh-squeezed fruit and veggie juices on a daily basis. Keep an eye out for his “Massive Social Sculpture” works. More at: djspooky.com.
