U.S. stock futures were lower on Wednesday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped following Tuesday’s lower close.
Brent crude surged toward $100 per barrel following military exchanges in the Middle East. Escalating supply disruption fears intensified after CENTCOM destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in response to attacks on U.S. naval vessels and Houthi strikes targeted Saudi energy facilities.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that the U.S. “can’t pause” its artificial intelligence race with China, stressing that “if they were to pull ahead of us on AI, then nothing else matters.” However, while defending the infrastructure buildout, Bessent gave tech companies a “D-minus” for their community outreach, cautioning that a growing local backlash threatens the nation’s technological edge.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.8%, and the two-year bond was at 4.4%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing in a 60.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking interest rates at its September meeting.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF(NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were lower on Wednesday. The SPY was down 0.42% at $762.75, while the QQQ declined by 0.59% to $714.16.

U.S. stock futures declined on Tuesday, as the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices fell, following Friday’s lower close.
Small business sentiment cooled in August as the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index fell 1.1 points to 98.7, pulling back from July’s high but remaining slightly above its 52-year average of 98.0. The drop was largely driven by deteriorating expectations for general business conditions and a net negative 9% of owners reporting lower nominal sales over the past quarter.
Brent crude futures climbed above $99 per barrel as U.S. markets reopened following the Labor Day holiday, driven by national gas prices hitting a record holiday high of $4.15 a gallon on Monday. Addressing the surge, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that oil prices “will drop precipitously” once the conflict with Iran ends, predicting prices will fall to “Three Dollars a gallon, but ultimately, below Two Dollars a gallon.”
This week, investors will look out for the August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report due on Friday and Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) highly anticipated product release event on Wednesday, which is expected to feature new iPhone 18 models.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.81%, and the two-year bond was at 4.38%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing in a 60.4% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking interest rates at its September meeting.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were mixed on Tuesday. The SPY was down 0.26% at $768.16, while the QQQ advanced by 0.049% to $719.32.

U.S. stock futures were mixed on Thursday, as the Dow Jones and S&P 500 indices rose, while the Nasdaq 100 index fell, following Wednesday's higher close.
For the week ending Aug. 29, U.S. initial jobless claims ticked up slightly by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 206,000, reflecting continued tightness and stability in the labor market. Meanwhile, fresh trade balance data for July revealed that the U.S. goods and services deficit widened sharply by $17.4 billion, or 24.4%, to $88.6 billion as imports surged while exports declined.
President Donald Trump predicted Wednesday that the stock market will continue moving higher despite the ongoing war in Iran and oil price volatility, dismissing concerns while noting the market keeps “hitting new records every day.” He added, "Believe it or not, the stock market will go up.”
Trump also sparked domestic backlash by suggesting the Strait of Hormuz be renamed to "TRUMP STRAIT." Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) criticized the move, calling Trump a "mad king.”
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.76%, and the two-year bond was at 4.35%. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool projections show markets pricing in a 60.2% likelihood of the Federal Reserve hiking interest rates at its September meeting.
The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(NYSE: SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF(NASDAQ: QQQ), which track the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, respectively, were higher in premarket on Thursday. The SPY was up 0.20% at $766.71, while the QQQ advanced by 0.09% to $709.88.

Energy markets surged following an exchange of U.S. airstrikes and Iranian counterattacks in the Middle East, pushing Brent crude up 0.55% to $95.17 a barrel. Threatening global oil supplies, Tehran retaliated against U.S. bases after military strikes targeted Iranian capabilities in response to shipping attacks.

Geopolitical and trade anxieties spiked over the weekend following U.S. military strikes on Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz, which triggered Iranian missile and drone retaliation against U.S. air bases in Jordan on Sunday. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump intensified trade tensions by calling Canada "the worst" for trade abuses and asserting his tariffs have "saved" the U.S. auto industry.
