  • Episode 56: Conversation with Massimo Pigliucci
You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life.
Today's special guest Massimo Pigliucci joins me to talk about practical applications of Stoicism, how Stoic Philosophy can benefit us in modern times, and address misconceptions about Stoicism.
We explore whether Stoicism encourages us to suppress or ignore emotions; what it means to be virtuous; what a good life looks like; Stoics' view on wealth; whether Stoics are killjoys; social approval; insults; being offended; regret; toleration; and friendship among other topics.
Prof. Pigliucci has a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee. He currently is the K.D. Irani Professor of Philosophy at the City College of New York. His research interests include the philosophy of biology, the relationship between science and philosophy, the nature of pseudoscience, and the practical philosophy of Stoicism.
In the area of public outreach, Prof. Pigliucci has published in national and international outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post , and the Wall Street Journal, among others.
He is a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and a Contributing Editor to Skeptical Inquirer. He publishes two blogs: Plato’s Footnote ( platofootnote.org ), on general philosophy,
and How to Be a Stoic ( howtobeastoic.org ), on his personal exploration of Stoicism as practical philosophy.
He is also the author or editor of 13 books (full list: https://platofootnote.wordpress.com/books/), most recently of the best selling How to Be A Stoic: Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life (Basic Books). Other titles include Answers for Aristotle: How Science and Philosophy Can Lead Us to a More
Meaningful Life (Basic Books); Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk (University of Chicago Press), and Science Unlimited? The Challenges of Scientism (co-edited with M.
    Boudry, University of Chicago Press).

  • Episode 54: Prom Dress Cultural Appropriation?
You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life.
I respond to the charge of cultural appropriation leveled at teenager Keziah Daum who wore a traditional Chinese dress to her high school prom event. I focus on Stoic themes of cosmopolitanism, humility, and valuing wisdom no matter where it originated to argue, in this case, that the controversy is much ado about nothing.

  • Episode 51: Is Jordan Peterson A Stoic?
You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life.
Although Jordan Peterson does not consider himself a Stoic or mention Stoicism as an inspiration, there are many parallels between messages from Stoic thinkers and Jordan Peterson relating to getting one's life in order; prevailing amidst suffering; capacity for people to strive towards the good; and questioning public opinion.
I also talk about dissimilarities between Jordan Peterson and Stoic Philosophy focusing on his treatment of individuals and groups he disagrees with namely men going their own way (MGTOW) who he dubbed "pathetic weasels." Ideas, too, concerning dominance hierarchies, a focus of Peterson's work, are absent from Stoic texts.
Surely, fans of Jordan Peterson's work and even Peterson himself could benefit from study and application of Stoic Philosophy.

  • Episode 50: Stoicism and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) with Matt Thornton
You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life.
In today's episode, I have a conversation with Matt Thornton about parallels between Stoic Philosophy and mixed martial arts, particularly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Even though you might not practice martial arts, this conversation has lots to offer. We talk about mental toughness, discipline, goal-setting, personal development, handling adversity, challenging yourself, open-mindedness, ego, and much more.
Matt Thornton was one of the early group of Americans to become involved in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu having been introduced to it in 1991. He was also the first person from the state of Oregon to receive a black belt in the art.
Matt has worked with some of the best MMA fighters, grapplers and combat athletes in the world including UFC hall of famers Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Forrest Griffin. He has also produced Oregon’s first and so far only Mundials world champion.
New York Times best-selling author Sam Harris said, “Matt Thornton is one of the clearest Martial Arts instructors I have come across.” As of this writing, Matt has awarded thirteen Brizilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and his very own Straight Blast Gym has produced multiple UFC fighters (including the biggest UFC Champion in history Conor McGregor) – multiple BJJ world champions, including black belt medalists – and currently stands as the world’s leading organization for functional martial arts, combat sports, and self-defense.
Matt’s main emphasis over the last decade has been addressing superstition as it relates to the fields of sports training, combat sports, and martial arts. His methodology known as aliveness was designed as a tool to help people distinguish between fact and fiction. He is currently working on a book which will cover the topic of violence and its relationship to both combat sports and skepticism.
