We must be approaching the end times, as Peter says scoffers will come at end times. In order to answer scoffers remember 1) God's view of time, 2) God's love for man, and 3) God's prophetic declarations.

Their two favorite topics are the bookends of scripture, how the world began and how the world will end. In between they say things that will mess with your mind like, why to bad things happen to good people.

Some of the strongest language in all the NT is reserved here for the heretic and their behavior. They insult gov't officials, encourage rioting, destroy the family.

Peter gives three illustrations of God's judgment for heresy. For the ungodly, the result is obvious. For the believer, we know God never judges indiscriminately but calls us out by name. We are marked for deliverance. God alone is able to separate out the "wheat from the chaff."

The subtle affect of heresy creeps in slowly until it causes ruin and can no longer be undone.
