We spend a lot of time worrying about what others will think about the choices we make & that we aren't worthy enough of making our own choices without external validation, which creates guilt when we finally do make choices that benefit us first. But I'm here to tell you why we NO LONGER need to ever feel guilty about doing what's best for ourselves.
Show Notes:
I live my life with the weight of other people’s made-up expectations on my shoulders. It’s pretty ridiculous, actually. And when I say made up, I mean that my mind is making these expectations up for me to shoulder the burden. It’s because I am so wrapped up in worried about what other people are thinking about me.
But what we don’t realize is that most of the time people could care less about what we are doing, how we look, what we said, any of that. And even when they do (which is just their own insecurities popping up), it doesn’t matter because you don’t have to accept what they say as truth. And the silly thing is I know I’ve done this to someone, too. I have judged someone at first glance without knowing any actual knowledge. And I know this sounds bad, but whether you want to admit it or not, we have all done this. We all have our own biases’ & it can just happen if we allow our emotions to lead our actions.
It’s easy to get caught up in thinking we need to only do things that other people will approve of because we don’t want them to think differently of us. But unfortunately, we can’t please everyone. Some people just want to be unhappy about everything & everyone in their lives. And also, it’s important to realize that the only way popular opinion about something can be changed is if enough people start doing the thing, without caring what others think, and make it a normal thing over time. And sometimes we have to be those test people.
In regards to feeling guilty, often times we don’t feel worthy enough to make helpful decisions for ourselves unless someone else signs off or approves it for us. We are so worried about other people judging us for our decisions, even if it’s something positive. Or we are really stuck in our people-pleasing behaviors that it seems almost impossible to do something that benefits ourselves directly & first.
Because of this, I wanted to share with you a list of things you should not feel guilty doing for yourself or making the decision about because you are worthy of these choices. Everyone is. We have to do what is best for us. And those of us that are people pleasers & codependent may not realize that a lot of people live their lives like this already, we just choose not see that perspective.
