If we tell a child that what they are feeling is not real, or not that big a deal it sends a message that they are not believable or they can't trust their.  experience in the world and sets them up for a lot of confusion.  Our hope when we do it is to make the hurt go away but the hurt ends up staying and being wrapped in a ball of confusion that they can't figure out.  Stay in and listen to whatever is being said and be curious.  Dig deeper and find out what hidden worry they are really working on.  It isn't our hurt as a parent so lets stay separate from it so we can be a true ally and help.
