Part Two in the first season of Stories from the Hearth's bonus historical and interview series: The Wandering Bard. Each season of The Wandering Bard examines a different aspect of the history and nature of storytelling, as well as people behind it. In season one of The Wandering Bard, we ask the question “Why do we tell stories?”, and in today's episode, we examine how storytelling forms the backbone of culture, and how through our stories we help to create, preserve, and challenge our various cultural understandings.
In the next instalment of The Wandering Bard, we will be looking at the kind of lessons we pass down through our stories - from the ethical and moral, to the practical.
Stories from the Hearth is an experimental storytelling experience ft. truly original fiction and thoughtfully produced soundscapes. The aim of this podcast is to rekindle its listeners' love for the ancient art of storytelling (and story-listening), and to bring some small escapism to the frantic energies of the modern world. Stories from the Hearth is the brainchild of queer punk poet, environmentalist, and anarchist Cal Bannerman. Vive l'art!

With regards to the use of the term "whorehouse" in place of "brothel" (or some other less offensive term) - the author decided to use this term only after much deliberation, and only as they felt it in keeping with both the parlance of the historical setting of their story, and the character of its protagonist, who, let's face it, is not a very nice guy.

On a lonely island, wreathed in mist, Ludmiła the two-spirit harvests the soft down of eider ducks for a living. Made an outcast because of their gender-fluidity, Ludmiła finds companionship in the most unlikely of places. With mad sailors, new-born ducklings, and reflections on queerness, this is a tale of friendship, love, and the celebration of our differences.

In the Stories from the Hearth minisode series - normally exclusive to Patreon - Calum reads a classic story from the public domain; be it fable, fairy-tale, or moral; European, or International. Sometimes they perform them as they were first told, sometimes they rewrite them in their own style, and sometimes they perform bits and pieces from their own body of work. In minisode one, they read The Steadfast Tin Soldier by Hans Christian Andersen; a tale of love and heartbreak, adventure and betrayal, first published in 1838, and as affecting today as it was then.
Stories from the Hearth minisodes are exclusive to Patreon, where the reading of a new bonus story will be released monthly. To gain access to every minisode, as well as a slew of other exciting perks, consider supporting the podcast by becoming a patron: https://www.patreon.com/storiesfromthehearthpodcast
