In this deeply personal episode of Stories To Be Told with Talitha, Emily Jeffery shares the life-changing health journey that forced her to rethink everything she believed about body image, motherhood, and trusting her own instincts.
At just 27 years old, Emily is a wife, mother to her young son River, former Navy member, and passionate advocate for women's health. After years of bodybuilding, overcoming body image struggles, and choosing to undergo breast augmentation, she never imagined that what appeared to be normal postpartum changes would eventually lead to a rare and frightening medical diagnosis.
Emily opens up about navigating pregnancy while her husband was deployed, the loneliness of becoming a first-time mum away from her own family, and the unexpected friendships that helped her through one of the biggest transitions of her life. She reflects on the identity shifts that come with motherhood, learning to appreciate what her body can do rather than how it looks, and the pressure many women carry to meet unrealistic beauty standards.
As time went on, Emily began experiencing persistent rashes, chronic fatigue, inflammation, and changes to one of her breast implants. After months of unanswered questions, specialist appointments, and being told different possibilities, she continued advocating for herself until further testing revealed something no one expected— Scedosporium infection (caused by the fungus Scedosporium) which is a rare mould infection growing around her breast implant. The diagnosis ultimately led to urgent surgery and the removal of both implants, changing the course of her life forever.
Throughout this honest conversation, Emily speaks openly about the emotional impact of the experience, the reality of navigating the healthcare system, the importance of listening to your body, and why she believes every woman deserves to feel empowered to seek answers when something doesn't feel right. She also shares how becoming a mother completely transformed the way she sees herself, replacing years of self-criticism with gratitude for the strength and resilience of her body.
This episode is not intended to create fear around cosmetic procedures, but rather to encourage informed decision-making, body acceptance, and self-advocacy. Emily's experience is incredibly rare, yet her message about trusting your instincts and pushing for answers when something feels wrong is one that resonates far beyond her own story.
