Stories We Inherit: History Through Their Eyes

Before they were our grandparents, they were two young people growing up through one of the most turbulent periods in modern Chinese history.

What was it like to grow up in China during the Cultural Revolution and the Great Famine? Why would a young boy leave home with his sibling to go on a 2 year trek across China? How did his household survive being labeled counterrevolutionary in a period of violent change? How did a young girl go from the rural countryside as a "poor peasant" to attending college at a prestigious university?

Join Isabel and Sophie as they sit down with their paternal grandparents Li Geyang and Zhang Huijuan to hear their stories of growing up during the Great Leap Forward, the Great Chinese Famine, and the Cultural Revolution.

Stories We Inherit is a podcast about the stories behind history, told by the people who lived them. Because sometimes the most extraordinary history is sitting right across the dinner table.
