The First Shaykh’s Story: The Old Man and His Gentle Gazelle
As the first of the three travelers to intervene on behalf of the merchant, the first Shaykh tells a poignant tale of betrayal, magic, and transformation. He arrives leading a gazelle, which he reveals is actually his wife, transformed by sorcery.
The story follows the Shaykh’s long struggle with his wife’s jealousy toward his concubine and their young son. Driven by malice, the wife uses dark magic to turn the boy into a calf and his mother into a cow. The Shaykh eventually discovers the truth with the help of a shepherd’s daughter, who possesses the power to break the spells. In an act of restorative justice, the wife is transformed into the gazelle that now travels by the Shaykh's side—a living reminder of the consequences of one's actions and the complexity of mercy.
