On this episode of StoryJacker I am taking a bit of a left turn. This podcast is still fundamentally about how we pay attention to the stories we tell ourselves, but it is explored through a larger cultural lens. My guest on this show is Author and Educational Futurist, Myra Travin.
Myra spends a lot of time thinking about the future and how humans will interact with Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool, or maybe as the next type of sentient life on this planet. Are we fully conscious of how this tool is growing? That this tool is learning about us and do we need to wake up and become part of the conversation regarding how we want to create this new life form.
What's clear is that AI is here, what is still up in the air, is how we will grow the algorithms that are AI's brain, and give it aspects of our humanness, our values, and not just find ourselves asleep at the wheel and being driven by commerce and marketing values.
I would say that Myra's personal mission is a call to action to get people involved in the conversation about what we want the future to look like.

On this episode of StoryJacker, I had a lively conversation with Téa (pronounced Tay’ah) Silvestre of Story Bistro and the Luminaries Round Table, about how we solopreneurs and entrepreneurs, can get curious about the stories of our businesses, whether it’s growing our business or changing our business direction altogether.
When we find ourselves working to create change in our lives it can feel scary. Sometimes it feels like the wrong fit, because we are working hard on someone else’s vision, so how do you find the ideas that your excited about and light yourself on fire for your dreams?
We look at some powerful tools, like Proprioceptive Writing which is a method for exploring the mind through writing. Tea recommends the book Writing the Mind Alive, by Linda Metcalf.
Tea spent the last 20+ years working in Marketing, working first with the Corporate world, then Government, and then onto the national nonprofit organizations. Finding herself feeling a bit less than satisfied she started her own business.
Through Story Bistro and the Luminaries Round Table, Tea is coaching, mentoring and teaching small biz clients.
What’s different here is the emphasis on storytelling (and the de-emphasis on traditional marketing stuff like benchmarks, conversion rates, and other sorts of comparisons).
She’s not saying those things aren’t sometimes important. She just isn’t interested in championing them. Instead she discusses how we can begin to get curious about what it is that we really want to do and focus on a marketing direction that is authentic to who we are and what we want for our businesses.
In today’s conversation Tea talks about finding your own voice, developing your passions, and developing your own authentic way to show up in the world. We discuss getting curious about our motivations, listening to our internal conversations, and being aware of how we communicate our work.
Tea's mission is to help you learn to tell your most engaging and authentic stories; by learning to listen to yourself, you can learn how to listen deeply to your audience and prospective customers; and how to put all of that together in a way that brings you more clients, more prosperity and more joy.

In this episode of StoryJacker, Lyssa Danehy deHart interviews adventurer, visual artist, University Professor, and photographer Daniel Peebles. Dan discusses the early influences of his narrative style, reading the Dirty Realists and their exploration of the individual perspective of life in a ambiguous world. He also shares how he has been able to create a powerful personal voice, in a world filled with photographic images. His Narrative Photography is part personal exploration part expanded human exploration.
Along the way Dan got curious about his own life and when it got to painful, he learned to inquire into the stories he was telling himself.
At what point are you ready to make a change? At what point are you willing to investigate why you are reacting and responding to life the way you are? And, what can you do with the awareness once you've started to get curious?
Dan talks about his very personal journey, the emotions, thoughts and beliefs that he had to question in order to grow as a person and as an artist. Diving in deep to find his authentic self.
If you are an artist trying to find your own unique voice is a world filled with imagery, maybe it’s time to explore yourself a bit. And, please go and check out Dan's storied images at his website, www.danielpeebles.com if you happen to find yourself in Albuquerque, New Mexico with some time on your hands, stop by Exhibit 208 Gallery www.exhibit208.com to see his work in person.

In this episode of StoryJacker, Lyssa Danehy deHart interviews adventurer, traveler, and speaker, Wendy Hinman, author of Tightwads on the Loose.
Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and her husband Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth’s large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they’d be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk. They live without most “necessities” and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless “character-building opportunities.”
There are really two stories happening, the first is the outward adventure and the the second is the transformational internal adventure. We spend this episode delving into the transformational internal experience and how Wendy was able and willing to leap out of the box and into an epic adventure.
To find your own copy of Tightwads on the Loose, head over to Wendy's website, http://wendyhinman.com or you can find her book on Amazon. Wendy also is a regular speaker at book stores, libraries, boating clubs and at writing conferences. If you have the opportunity to go hear her, take it!

In this episode of StoryJacker, Lyssa Danehy deHart interviews Lori Ann Davis about her transformational story. Lori talks about her deeply personal journey and talks about how she has changed her life. Lori shares her insights about how she created something unexpected from the ending of a long marriage.
In the first episode, I promised to share a StoryJack of from my own life. Through the process of thinking about what I might want to share, or really how to sum it up and not take hours, I realized that I have dozens of places I have transformed myself.
I chose to start with Love.
What I was doing in my 20's came from stories I was unconsciously choosing. And, these unconscious stories weren't working so well. When I was 25 decided to take a look at what I was doing in relationships, why I was doing what I was doing, and then what it might look like if I did it differently. This episode is all about developing insights, so that I could find myself and then lose my heart to the right person... me.
I'm Lyssa Danehy deHart and I am a StoryJacker, this time I am StoryJacking Love.
What the heck is StoryJacking? This is a question that I have been fielding a lot recently. Part of the reason is that I invented the StoryJack mashup, so this is a new concept. If you don't know what it is, you are not alone.
We all live in stories. The stories we tell ourselves, the ones we tell others, the stories others tell us, the ones we believe, the stories that scare us, and the ones that we use to drive ourselves forward. Stories are our narrative, describing life as we see and feel it. Every bit of information that we take into our mind comes to us in the form of a story; the news, movies, reality TV, books, gossip, and even education. If you think about the stories that capture your attention, they are probably all juicy stories.
Narrative psychology is a viewpoint or a stance within psychology concerned with the "storied nature of human conduct" or in other words, how human beings deal with experience by constructing stories and listening to the stories of others. (Wikipedia)
There is always a story that we are telling ourselves in every situation. If we feel empowered or disempowered, there is a story being told. These powerful stories engage us and form the glue that binds us to people, places, ideas, and ultimately to our sense of self.
Stories help us to describe and align with our tribe; the people we will love, the people who will challenge us, the work we are passionate about, the lives that we will create, what we could never do, what we must absolutely do, and each intention is a story.
