Bosi interviews her friend Ondiek about what queer media means to him, the important role it played in shaping his understanding and comfort with queerness, and how queer media brings absurdity to what we think of as normal. The show opens with Ruvimbo’s interview with Gelila, who wrestles with self-doubt in challenging the archetype of someone who looks like her on university campus, wondering if she’ll ever be good enough. Ruvimbo then expands on these feelings of self-doubt and alienation in her self-interview. This uncomfortable stretching of her identity will all be worth it if she can help contribute to a better future, and she draws empowerment from seeing the portrayal of strong Black African Women in Black Panther. The episode ends with Ruvimbo’s interview with Edil, a fourth year student who is combating feelings of the Imposter Syndrome by engaging in communities and spaces that fight back against racist and islamophobic attitudes on campus. A live broadcast of an episode of Hart House Conversations focusing on the importance of stories as tools for social change. History is often said to be written by the “victors” which leaves important stories silenced or ignored. This Hart House Conversations will explore what kinds of social change can happen when those stories are given a platform and those voices are amplified to broader audiences. This winter, a diverse team of podcasters at Hart House called the Storyweavers have worked diligently to gather a selection of these courageous and transformative stories. The project culminated in a live panel discussion about the importance of storytelling both locally and globally as a tool for social change and subversive self-expression.
