An estimated 500 thousand people have been killed in Somalia since 1991. Al Shabab has been responsible for thousnads of these deaths and continues to be active in parts of Somalia.

For nearly 30 years, Somalia has endured every imaginable hardship.

From war, and famine, to terrorist attacks, like the one last October not far from where I'm standing now, that killed more than 500 people. This break down of society was decades in the making.

Turkey has set up its biggest overseas military base in Somalia's capital Mogadishu. The facility is spread out over 4 square kilometres. The base has the capacity to train over 1,500 troops at a time, according to the Somali government.

With seventy percent of the country’s more than 12 million people under the age of 30 years old. 73 percent live below the poverty line, half of the population needs humanitarian assistance and one in 6 people have been uprooted from their
