Richard Chase, also known as the "Sacramento Vampire," was an American serial killer who terrorized Sacramento, California, in the late 1970s. Born in 1950, Chase exhibited signs of mental illness from an early age, later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. His criminal activities escalated from animal mutilation to murdering six people within a month in 1977 and 1978.
Chase earned his gruesome nickname due to his horrifying practice of drinking the blood of his victims and cannibalizing their remains. His choice of victims appeared to be largely opportunistic and included men, women, and children. The brutality of his crimes, combined with his bizarre motives related to his delusions about preventing his own disintegration, shocked and captivated public attention.
Chase's reign of terror ended when he was arrested in 1979. He was found guilty of six counts of murder and sentenced to death. However, he died by suicide in 1980 while on death row in San Quentin State Prison. His case has been studied extensively in the fields of forensic psychology and criminal behavior due to the extreme nature of his mental health issues and the severity of his crimes.
