The other day while working on the Antonio Inoki podcast, a clip of Tatsumi Fujinami in early ECW popped up in my feed. It came from the Special Guest Ref guys (I’ll link their review below). The moment I started watching it I realized exactly what it was: HeiSei Mysterious Exhibition – America Lawless Pro Wrestling Zone – Tatsumi Fujinami Ritual of Blood (1992) After Fujinami lost the IWGP Heavyweight Championship to Riki Choshu at the Tokyo Dome on January 4, 1992, he disappeared for four months. He grew a little goatee, flew to America, and filmed what New Japan treated as a full Musha Shugyo — a young lion’s journey through the “gutter” of the American independent scene. This 45-minute Japanese television special turns a handful of gyms, an early ECW bar show, and a boxing session into pure cinematic drama. Japanese production frames every location like a war zone. Killer Kowalski is presented like Freddy Krueger. Early ECW at Mike Schmidt’s original sports bar is treated like an underground fight club full of ex-cons. They even claim thousands of dollars in underground betting is happening every night. In 1934, an American journeyman wrestler from Missouri named Cyclone Mackey (real name Corbin James Massey) stepped into the ring in Mexico City wearing a custom black hood and became La Maravilla Enmascarada — the very first enmascarado in Lucha Libre.

This is the untold origin of one of Mexico’s most sacred wrestling traditions. How a white dude from Missouri accidentally revolutionized Lucha Libre, inspired the mask vs. mask matches we love today, and helped turn the mask into a cultural symbol worn by legends like El Santo.
