  • The Geography of Solar Power

Eight years ago India teamed up with France to launch the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on the first day of the Paris meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP).

This took the world by surprise, which till then believed that India naysaying could sabotage the crucial talks to battle climate change. Indeed, this was the coming out moment for Indian climate diplomacy, which till then had been siloed as a perennial critic and naysayer. It also ensured India a passage to the global high table as an entity seriously committed to fighting global climate change.

This so-called alliance of sunshine states—falling between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn–is made up of mostly countries from the global South. It provides another platform for India in its bid to be the champion of the global South.

How will all this play out? And has the ISA lived upto its initial hype? To answer this and more, Anil Padmanabhan spoke to Vyoma Jha, India Clean Energy Senior Advocate, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

  • Retracing India's Finest Military Operation

On this day 52 years ago, India won the war against Pakistan, which led to the creation of a new country (Bangladesh). It was a swift military operation but was planned over months after the Pakistani army went on a killing spree in late-March that year in what was then East Pakistan.

As the Indian military prepared for an operation, Indian authorities also ensured that the atrocities committed by the Pakistani army did not go unnoticed, especially by the Western media.

In this episode of 'Simply Nitin', StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale details what happened in the lead-up to December 16, 1971, and how in 13 days the Pakistani army bit the dust.

  • ‘Govt’s International Standing Enhanced By SC Verdict On Abrogation Of Article 370’

Alok Bansal, Director of India Foundation on the Supreme Court’s verdict on the government’s move to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir says the “historic” verdict has provided a legal sanctity to the government’s decision which now cannot be overturned.

This decision now lays to rest the perception among some people in J&K that Jammu and Kashmir had a special role because they signed an instrument of accession that no other princely state had signed.

On the international front, Bansal believes that while some Western organisations may continue to criticise the decision overall the Supreme Court verdict enhances the government’s standing internationally as it shows that what they did was correct.

  • India Needs Another Aircraft Carrier: Navy Chief

We have moved a case for a third aircraft carrier, the second that can be indigenously built, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar has told Nitin A. Gokhale.
In an exclusive chat on board INS Visakhapatnam, the Admiral said the Indian Navy has to keep an eye on the vast Indian Ocean Region and an even wider area in the Indo-Pacific. “The idea is to have at least two operational carrier battle groups, for which three aircraft carriers will be needed.”

He also went on to elaborate why engagement is the key when it comes to the region and how the Indian Navy is going about it.

  • How The Northern Sea Route Can Alter Global Dynamics

As global temperatures rise and sea ice thaws, geopolitics is hotting up in the cooler climes of the Arctic, courtesy the Northern Sea Route (NSR). If the passage becomes ice-free the whole year round due to global warming, it could have a major impact on the global commercial markets.
It will become a shorter shipping route between Northeast Asia and Europe, reducing transit time from Asia by at least 40% compared to the route that goes via the Suez Canal, says Japanese scholar Dr Daisuke Kawai, Deputy Director of Economic Security Research Program at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo.
Adds that it would also allow access to the huge untapped deposits of oil, gas and mineral resources such as rare earths in the region, which would impact the global energy markets.

  • ‘Underestimating BRI V 2.0 Could Be Dangerous’

It would be extremely naïve and dangerous to assume that the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s signature foreign policy initiative, is losing steam, says Dr Walter Ladwig, a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at King’s College, London.
The question mark is important, he told Ramananda Sengupta, because there are indications that China has learned from its mistakes over the first decade, and is rebooting the BRI to address those.

  • Israel-Hamas War: ‘Time For Friends To Tell Both Sides Hostility No Solution’

As Israel steps up its ground offensive in Gaza in retaliation for the deadly attacks by Hamas on October 7, voices favouring a ceasefire have grown. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has warned of a ‘long’ war that would destroy the terror infrastructure of Hamas.

This is the moment for friends to step in and tell both sides that hostility by itself is not a solution, says analyst and author MJ Akbar, in a chat with StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale.
