Andrea siempre era la que rescataba a los demás, así que lo mejor era olvidarse de aquel policía engreído. La lástima era que él parecía no querer darse por enterado, de hecho, daba la impresión de que había decidido hacer todo lo posible para resultar inolvidable.

    Release date: January 1, 2024

    Publisher's Summary:
Zona Gale was born on 26th August 1874 in Portage, Wisconsin. She was exceptionally close to her parents and later used them as the basis for characters in her works. She wrote and illustrated her first story at the age of 7 and by 16 she was being paid for stories from the Milwaukee Evening Wisconsin. After studies at the University of Wisconsin, where she received a degree and two master's, she moved to New York and a job at the New York World newspaper. She was later hired as a secretary to Edmund Clarence Stedman, the poet, critic, essayist, banker, and scientist. and immersed herself in his literary circle. Gale returned to Portage in 1903 and realized her old world was full of new possibilities. She now dedicated herself to full-time writing. Her first novel 'Romance Island' was published in 1906 and she also began the popular 'Friendship Village' series of stories. In 1920 came 'Miss Lulu Bett', which depicts life in the Mid-West. Adapted into a play it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. It was a stellar achievement. After the deaths of her parents her works, both fiction and non-fiction, drifted towards mysticism and her belief that problems could be solved through a kind of transcendentalist enlightenment. Gale was a suffragist, a liberal Democrat, an active member of the National Woman's Party and a pacifist. Much of her time was taken up with advancing opportunities for women both at school and in careers. It was a cause she repeatedly emphasized in her novels: women's frustration at their lack of opportunities. In the mid 20's she began caring for a young relative, Leslyn, and later adopted her. At age 54, she married William L Breese, a childhood friend. Now a widower, he was a wealthy banker and hosiery manufacturer. She also became a step-mother to his daughter, Juliette. In mid-December 1938 she went to Chicago for medical treatment and contracted pneumonia a few days later. Zona Gale died of pneumonia in Passavant Hospital in Chicago on 27th December 1938. She was 64. 1 - Zona Gale - A Short Story Collection - An Introduction 2 - White Bread by Zona Gale 3 - Friday by Zona Gale 4 - The Dance by Zona Gale 5 - The Way the World Is by Zona Gale 6 - The Prodigal Guest by Zona Gale

Much of the first 30 years of her life was taken up with helping her sickly mother run the household and her father with parish work, and she herself suffered with asthma. Mary began writing with in her teens. She wrote in her journal in 1877, "What a pleasure and interest it would be to me in life to write books. I must strike out a line of some kind, and if I do not marry (for at best that is hardly likely, as I possess neither beauty nor charms) I should want some definite occupation, besides the home duties." Mary began by publishing some stories in The Graphic and her first novel 'The Danvers Jewels' a detective story followed in 1887. It was followed by Sir Charles Danvers (1889), Diana Tempest (1893). After her father retired in 1896, she moved with him and her sister Diana to Condover Hall before selling it to move to Albert Gate Mansions in Knightsbridge, London. Mary wrote the best seller 'Red Pottage' in 1899. It satirised religious hypocrisy and the conceit of country life. It was denounced as immoral. It also explored female sexuality. Publisher's Summary:
Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author's brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted 'Top Tens' across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions - Why that story? Why that author? The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature. Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something. In this decade the equality of the sexes is now law. In real life it's patchy. Power refuses to ebb or cede. In literary terms though women are again second to none with writing that strides confidently forward addressing the issues, the characters and the stories in unique and individual ways. 1 - The Top 10 - The Women - The 1920's - An Introduction 2 - The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield 3 - The String Quartet by Virginia Woolf 4 - Miss Ogilivy Finds Herself by Radclyffe Hall 5 - The Difference by Ellen Glasgow 6 - Rhapsody by Dorothy Edwards 7 - Hodge by Elinor Mordaunt 8 - Blessed Are the Meek by Mary Webb 9 - Decay by Marjorie Bowen 10 - The Night of No Weather by Violet Hunt 11 - Young Magic by Helen Simpson

Theodora Sarah Orne Jewett was born on 3rd September 1849 in South Berwick, Maine, to a family that had resided in New England for several generations. From early childhood Jewett suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and one remedy was frequent walks which contributed to her life-long love of nature. She was primarily educated at Miss Olive Rayne's school and then the Berwick Academy from where she graduated in 1866. But much of her time was also spent reading from the extensive collection of books in the family library. In 1868 at age 19, she was published 'Jenny Garrow's Lovers' in the Atlantic Monthly, and from this grew a reputation that was lauded and admired by both her captivated audience and such other noted writers as William Dean Howells. As well as novels and short stories she also wrote children's books and poetry volumes. Jewett was also admired for the strong female characters who were as intelligent and able as any man around them. In her personal life Jewett was attracted and attached to several women. Many of her poems reveal the intensity of her feelings towards them. Whether Jewett found physical love with them is open to debate but she often did find devoted and loving friendship, humor and literary encouragement. From 1881, after the death of James Fields, the editor of the Atlantic Monthly, she set up home with his widow, Annie, for the rest of her life in what was termed 'a Boston Marriage'; the cohabitation of two wealthy women, independent of male financial support. On her birthday in 1902, Jewett was involved in a carriage accident that effectively ended her literary career. In March 1909 Sarah Orne Jewett was paralyzed by a stroke, and after another on 24th June she died in her South Berwick home. Format: Unabridged Audiobook
    Length: 0 hours 31 minutes
    Release date: January 1, 2024
    Genres: Contemporary Women
    Publisher's Summary:
Little information survives on Catherine's life. She was born Amy Catherine Robbins in 1872. In about 1892 she was a student in a biology cramming class where the teacher was H G Wells. Though married he was quickly attracted to his student and within a short time they were living together in Woking, Surrey. He then divorced his first wife and married Catherine in October 1895 at St Pancras registery office. In the early years they were poor to the point that they could not afford to start a family. When they did they had two children; Philip in 1901 and Frank two years later. For much of her life she seemed to pursue other interests, being a mother, a gardener, running much of her husband's business affairs and this seemed to leave little time for her own literary pursuits. She published little during her lifetime apart from a few poems and some short stories. Indeed her prodigiously talented husband even referred to her as 'Jane' and soon all around her did too, her writing life seemingly in another personality far, far away. By the mid 20's she was ill with cancer and succumbed to its advance in 1927. Wells, although wayward and promiscuous during much of the marriage, now attempted to put his wife's literary merits into book form and published 'The Book of Catherine Wells', a collection of short stories and poems.
