  • Fleabag

Oh let's talk about it. You've heard about it. You've read about it. You know that numerous awards have been given to it, but have you watched it? I don't know why, but my gut tells me no. Critics are watching it. I have a feeling James Corden watched it. I know that Hollywood was watching it, but were we watching it? Are stay-at-home moms, bank tellers, and Margie down the road watching it? I'm just not sure.

It's gained so much notoriety and won so many awards and yet no one in my circle is talking about it. Just so you know, I have several circles, and they're big. I have to believe the reason you haven't been watching this is because you've been waiting on me. That's sweet and I get it. That's why I watched it for you. Ladies and gentlemen today we discuss Fleabag.

    Show Notes:

    • [01:37] My one word review is meh.
    • [01:57] Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the writer, creator, and star of Fleabag.
    • [02:11] I like a woman who says, "I'm going to be on TV and if I have to create it myself, I will."
    • [02:15] I like somebody who is funny and quick. I think she's talented.
    • [02:31] Any awards she has won, she deserves. It's the show, I'm not wild about.
    • [03:01] One of the things that makes Fleabag kind of different is breaking the fourth wall. That's the moment when they look at the camera and talk to you.
    • [03:12] This used to never be done. Now it's been done in Parks & Recreation and Modern Family, The Office, and even House of Cards.
    • [03:37] Her's isn't a mockumentary style. She's just looking at the camera and talking. She gets away with it.
    • [04:06] Olivia Colman is also in the show. She just won best actress for The Favourite. She's phenomenal in everything that she does. In the last few episodes of Fleabag, I was watching for her.
    • [04:25] Season 2 got better because they introduced the storyline of the hot priest.
    • [04:45] I didn't think season 1 was terrible. I didn't think season 2 was extravagant and glorious. It's just not my type of show and that's okay.
    • [05:27] I can spot talent, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is talented. There's just a rhythm that I can't get into.
    • [06:12] Don't watch the show if you're easily offended.
    • [06:53] For this show, I'm only putting on 2 Spanx!
    • [07:06] Ones for Olivia Colman and the other ones for Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Boy have I got a show for you. I have told exactly four people to watch the show because I wanted other reactions before I did this actual podcast episode. Honestly, this show is very different. It's most certainly not everyone's cup of tea. I can tell you. The reviews from these people are so varied and so mixed.

One is absolutely addicted. One wants to kill me for bringing it to their attention. One hated it and won't ever watch it again. The last one texts me about the show every time a new episode comes out. This week we are talking about one of the creepiest shows I've seen in a long while. This week we are discussing Servant from Apple TV.

    Show Notes:

    • [01:23] Servant streams from Apple TV.
    • [01:51] A lot of people think you need an Apple TV to get the Apple TV streaming service.
    • [02:59] Apple programming has really high-quality production. They have quality over quantity, at this point.
    • [03:29] This show is so out of the box. It's described as American psychological horror television. The show is creepy.
    • [04:00] I love M. Night Shyamalan. If you're familiar with his movies, you'll know that there's a creepy factor to them.
    • [04:28] He's only directed one episode and that one is titled Jericho.
    • [04:48] I watched the entire season. Then I went back and watched the trailer so I wouldn't give away too many things.
    • [05:03] The show is 30 minutes long to keep the creepiness factor up, and it worked.
    • [05:52] We have a mom and a dad. The dad is a chef and his wife is a news correspondent. They hire a nanny to come to their home and care for their son Jericho.
    • [06:20] The problem is that Jericho is a doll.
    • [07:02] The doll is for connection therapy for the wife and mom.
    • [07:27] The nanny is played by Nell Tiger Free and is as creepy as all get out.
    • [07:42] The woman who plays the mom is Lauren Ambrose who used to be on Six Feet Under.
    • [08:41] I hate movies like Saw. I like movies where you hear someone in the house.
    • [09:06] This movie was not a trigger to me in anyway.
    • [10:13] This was an entertaining crazy show, and I loved every second of it.
    • [10:17] In a nutshell, I'm giving this show 4 Spanx. I like scary things, and I like creepy things. This is both.
    • [10:31] I love M. Night Shyamalan and the effects and darkness he brings two things.
    • [10:44] I can't give the show 5 Spanx if Lauren Ambrose is going to be on season 2. The show has already been renewed for season 2.
    • [11:25] I could see Rachel McAdams or Kirsten Dunst as the newscaster.

This is my first movie review. There are so many choices out there that I just picked one. I was interested in this movie when it was first released, and I watched it the day of the release on TV. In the middle of watching this movie, David came in and said that we got the domain for Stream(H)er, and the podcast was going to be a reality. That's when I decided that this is the movie that I'm going to do.

If you don't like my choice or have another movie you would like me to review give me a shoutout on Instagram @MsMelissaRadke. You can also find me on Facebook or message or email me at [email protected]. Ask me, and I'll try to get to it. When you share our show don't forget #Streamher as in girl power.

When I chose this movie I didn't know what it would turn into. I just knew I wanted to review it. I didn't know it would end up with six Golden Globe and six Academy Award nominations. Here is my review for Marriage Story. It's a movie streaming on Netflix.

    Show Notes:

    • [02:12] I didn't know what this movie would turn into. I just knew I wanted to review it. I didn't know it would have six Golden Globe and six Academy Award nominations.
    • [02:55] This week's streaming service is Netflix.
    • [03:34] This movie is directed by Noah Baumbach.
    • [03:54] A marriage story is as plain Jane as marriage is. Once the glitter is off, we become a marriage story.
    • [05:14] I wasn't rooting for anyone after watching this movie. There wasn't a bad guy. I saw both of their points. That was a plus for me.
    • [06:20] Laura Dern is getting a lot of attention. She was a really great divorce lawyer.
    • [07:00] Alan Alda killed it as the first divorce attorney who was too kind.
    • [07:59] Kyle Bornheimer was also in the movie, but he didn't have any speaking parts.
    • [08:33] Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansen were the leads. They were both incredible.
    • [09:12] There is a scene where Adam Driver sings that didn't resonate with me.
    • [09:45] How can two people who love each other so much end up so far apart? This was at the heart of the movie and this is at the heart of most marriages.
    • [10:07] They have an intense discussion in the movie, yet she refers to him as "honey." I thought this was really powerful how she fell back on words and rhythms that were in her marriage.
    • [10:53] Go watch a Marriage Story. It is worth it. It deserved all of the nominations and awards.
    • [11:03] I was going to make my first Spanx review a 4 just because of the Hallmark movie girl in me. I wanted everything to be wrapped up in a bow, but I'll give it a 5 Spanx review.
    • [11:52] Go watch it. 5 Spanx!

You know those people who say, "I don't really watch that much TV?" You know those people who say, "how do you have so much time to watch TV?" I have two kids. It feels like I have eight. I travel and speak all over the United States to thousands of people. I'm working on my second book. I'm on social media every single day. I do a live video every single morning with my husband for 15,000 viewers, and I feed my husband at least three times a week. If I can do all of this, America, you can sit down and watch some TV.

Am I busy? Yes. Do I have a lot going on? Yes, but I still watch TV because I love it. It's my jam. I love movies, and I love television. Then one day streaming services happened. There were movies and TV all in one place. In my living room with my electric blanket and my cat. Now we have endless streaming choices, just like the Cheesecake Factory menu. This is where I come in. I'm going to watch it and tell you about it. If a movie sucks, I'll tell you, just like your best friend.

Here's what I want you to know about Stream(H)er. I can't stream everything, but when something comes out, and it's getting rave reviews, I'll try to cover it for you. If something comes out, and it's buried at the bottom of the list, I'm also going to cover that. If it's good, I'm going to cover it for you. I'm going to talk about the different streaming services. I also won't spoil the show for you. I'll just give an honest Spanx rating, because I'm Melissa. I'm the Stream(H)er.

    Show Notes:

    • [02:00] Do you remember when Netflix was a DVD? What happened to Redbox? Now we have endless streaming choices.
    • [04:52] I'm your new best friend. I'm going to watch it and tell you about it. If a movie sucks, I'm going to tell you.
    • [05:49] When it comes to streaming, I've got you.
    • [06:15] I can't stream all the things.
    • [07:55] I will stream what is good and bad. I'll talk about the different streaming services, and I won't include spoilers.
    • [08:11] Each episode is the title of the show I'm reviewing. I'm going to review one show an episode. The episodes will be short.
    • [09:28] A play with David and Melissa reenacting a review from Rotten Tomatoes.
    • [11:34] These reviews are going to be rated by Spanx. You'll want to watch a 5 Spanx movie.
