Women in sports was a rare thing a decade back. Today, they are excelling in sports. Parents to girls are now actively looking out for the best trainers, keeping track of sports competitions at the national and even at the international level. But how do athlete girls manage their menstrual periods? They usually put their strength to full use in the sport they play. Do periods add another layer of physical and mental stress to their body-mind? In this first anniversary episode of the Streelok podcast, I speak to tennis player Akanksha Nitture's mother Deepa Nitture on how tough it is to keep Akanksha menstrually healthy. She has also shared her observations on Akanksha's tightrope walk.

My search for a comfortable, no-nonsense, eco-friendly product with no adverse effect on the skin down there stopped at the menstrual cup. Any woman who discovers its benefits by using it over the course of two to three periods feels the difference in mood and happiness levels. Many even start advocating and promoting it. The cup took the 1A seat in this discussion with these fabulous women.

In Episode 08, I chat with two women in their mid-30s who have been using the menstrual cup during their periods for a considerable amount of time. More than four years for both of them, to be slightly more precise. Like most Indian girls, Afroz Inamdar (33) buried the traumatic experience of first periods deep into her consciousness. But do our memories ever fade away? In this episode, Afroz shares her ordeal of getting her first periods before she was even 10. She said, surprisingly, that sharing this on Streelok relieved her. For generations, periods have been discussed only among women in the family. Boys, or even men, seldom participate in these chats. In fact, most men closely encounter the phenomenon of periods and issues connected to it only after marriage. In this episode, I spoke to two of my friends, Ram and Kailash, and my husband, Abhishek, about how exactly men feel when their partner is on periods. How and when did they come to know about periods? What was their understanding in childhood, and how did it evolve?

"When I saw a picture of a vagina in the book, I realised I have a body part which I had never touched and explored. I learned that my vagina has three openings as shown in the picture."

Books that offer sex education in regional languages are few. Thankfully some gynecologists have written several books on this crucial topic in Marathi. In this episode, Reshma Arote, 24 shares her encounter with these books and how she learned about her body through reading.

“जेव्हा मी पुस्तकात योनीचं चित्र पाहिलं तेव्हा माझ्या असं लक्षात आलं की माझ्याच शरिरात एक अवयव असाही आहे ज्याला मी कधीच हात लावला नाहीये. चित्रात दाखवल्याप्रमाणेच माझ्याही योनीला तीन द्वार आहेत हे जाणवल्यावर मला नव्याने माझं शरीर समजत गेलं.”

स्थानिक भाषांमध्ये लैंगिक शिक्षण देणाऱ्या पुस्तकांची संख्या कमी आहे. मराठी भाषेत मात्र अनेक स्त्रीरोगतज्ज्ञांनी लैंगिक शिक्षणाची पुस्तकं लिहून वयात येणाऱ्या मुलांच्या मनातल्या प्रश्नांना उत्तरं दिली आहेत. या एपिसोडमध्ये २४ वर्षांची रेश्मा आरोटे तिने वाचलेल्या लैंगिक शिक्षण देणाऱ्या पुस्तकांविषयी सांगतेय. या पुस्तकांनी तिच्यात काय आणि कसा बदल घडवला हे नक्की ऐका.

As girls and women, we usually realise that our periods have begun when we actually see blood stains. But what about those who cannot “see”? In this episode, Gauri Deshmukh, a visually impaired student of Pune University, walks us through the struggle and the battle of being able to change pads and maintain hygiene during periods.

Gauri is a part of Divya Jhep, a community of visually impaired students studying in Sir Parshurambhau college in Pune. Yogita Kale, a faculty member at the college who leads the initiative, is mindful of what Gauri goes through. She has seen the trouble her visually impaired students face during periods. Yogita joins us to share how she is designing a workshop for differently abled students to help them manage their menstrual hygiene independently.

गौरी देशमुख स.प. महाविद्यालयाच्या दिव्य झेप या ग्रुपची सदस्य. असिस्टंट टीचर योगिता काळे यांनी काही विद्यार्थ्यांच्या सोबत हा ग्रुप सुरु केला. त्यांनी स्वतः त्यांच्याकडे शिकणाऱ्या अंध मुलींना पाळीदरम्यान येणाऱ्या अडचणी आणि त्यांना करावी लागणारी कसरत पाहिली आहे. त्यातूनच या मुलींसाठी मासिक पाळीच्या बाबतीत स्वयंसिद्ध होण्यासाठी एका कार्यशाळेच्या संकल्पनेवर त्यांनी काम सुरू केलं आहे. या पॉडकास्टमध्ये त्यांनी शेअर केलेले प्रसंग आणि त्या तयार करत असलेल्या कार्यशाळेबद्दल अधिक सविस्तर सांगितलं आहे.

Wheelchair bound Diksha Dinde is a global youth ambassador for education, and has represented India at various fora. She has traveled to Malaysia, South Korea, and Egypt, and has received praise from the Government of India. She faced tons of problems reaching here. One of them, is being physically challenged. Diksha cannot walk. But like every other woman, she gets periods. How challenging is it for her to keep up her menstrual health? In this episode, Diksha walks us through exactly that.

Most women consult a gynecologist only at the time of family planning and pregnancy. Rarely do women visit them for a regular menstrual health check up. How do you tell you are in periods without saying you are in periods?!

Taboo as the subject is, women have been using code-words to tell they are in their menstrual period for centuries. Women from the coastal Konkan region use the expression, “I’ve got brushed by a crow,” bringing out the widely held linking of a crow to something impure or unholy. Women in cities also sometimes refer to it as “it’s my birthday today!”

In this first episode, I chat with fellow women living in different parts of Maharashtra, my home state, to find out how they refer to the fact that they are in their periods.

“मला पाळी आली आहे” हे न सांगताही तुम्ही कसं सांगता? 

पाळी आल्यावर जवळच्यांना ते सांगण्यासाठी बायका वेगवेगळे कोड वर्ड्स वापरतात. कोकणातल्या मुली-बायका “मला कावळा शिवलाय” असं सांगतात तर शहरातल्या मुली “आज माझा बर्थडे आहे.” असं सांगतात.
